      Purple Koi Journey

It's no big secret, I have a one track mind. I have to do this, not because I think I am going to succeed so much as I know I would regret at least not trying. Obviously as has been pointed out several times, this color doesn't exist in Koi and this isn't like mixing paint. I think the most common sense pairings to try initially would be a leatherskin Benigoi with a Konjo Asagi. My thinking is that some of the fry will be born with red tinted skin under the blue scales of the Asagi *theoretically* resulting in some solid colored Budo Goromo types. Maybe.

I will start collecting some Tosai for this project early next year, my goal for this year is 3 of each, hopefully with a male/female mix and begin the hurry up and wait process of growing them out to good Oyogi. I know some will wash out, die etc. so for the next two or 3 years the vast majority of new Koi will be specifically these (but I may or may not throw in a random pretty).

While I'm impatiently waiting to be disappointed by how my Koi do during their growouts, I will be adding more ponds (sticking with multiple Intex pools) more Bakki Showers Bogs etc. It's really good I have 3 years before my first Purple Spawn because I've got a lot of work and learning yet to do so I don't feel so rushed now. I will try to do at least one crappy spawn (pond mutts only) each year until then so I learn how not to kill the fry, cull etc.

Any and all advice appreciated as always.

You might want to consider finding some koi with purple beni that might make your quest more interesting.

I'm still wondering about that. I know there is a transparency to the scales on Asagi that will carry the blue but I don't think the same is true for Benigoi. I have seen some Asagi that have red instead of blue but they are orange, it's not a true red. I think it's smart to have back up pairings but I haven't figured a good one out just yet. I do have a blue leatherskin I might be able to utilize in a back breeding down the line.

Are these a thing that really exist? The only thing like that I've heard of is Pink Beni. Do you have a picture you can post?

If you do try it, I think you'd have to be soragoi based. I've seen light soragoi tosai look almost lavender - you'd probably have to build on that. It might be easier to try for lavender instead of violet.
I understand that human logic of benigoi x asagi, but I think you'd end up with a bunch of aka matsuba type fish. If red + blue = purple, asagis would turn purple with age but they don't.

Just my humble thoughts...which are worth as much as you paid for them

I'm glad you mentioned this because I have a Soragoi that I thought might come in useful later in the line, so I must be on the right track. I'm willing to play around with all combinations with the possibility of succeeding. And I'm sure there will be some unique oddballs along the way

Back in my teenager party days we used to make a concoction called jungle juice. You take a giant tub and fill with every type of juice and alcohol you could get your hands on. I think you should try something similar but with eggs and milt. Just mix it all together, sit back and enjoy. I actually spawned some of our koi this way about 10yrs ago. Ended up with some interesting looking fish that are still at the in-law's today.

Purple Beni is not purple, Pink beni is not pink (to most people), and Yellow beni is not yellow.

I might do this with the Crapigoi but the brood stock I need to do pairs the first few years so I can keep track of which fish throw what traits. I might end up with the right fish but in the wrong pairs and that could take several years to sort out.

And on that note, trying to pair Koi is like breeding a Dalmatian to a Great White to get a good litter of Chihuahuas.....

No actual updates at this point but I am going to acquire a Koi like this one from my Koicaine Dealer. It's an Ikarashi "Snowflake" aka Yumi or Yuki or something like that. I would have pulled the trigger on this one which wasn't actually for sale but his really good friend wanted it so he sold it to him. Sorry the pictures are blurry, they are screenshots of a video. I love the Ice Blue Color, I hope it stays that way a long time. It could be useful in my purple quest or a total washout but it sure is pretty. I'm so excited for next year to hurry up and get here!

Blue tubs are enhancing the colors you are seeing. Typically young koi that have a perceived blue cast by some change as they age.
