      New fish from Japan trip

Bought more than I planned, but looking forward to getting them in my pond. I like male koi, so most are boys.

Isa Showa - wife picked this one, she liked her cute nose

I will let the OP answer your question but typically, koi quality , selection and price are fully subjective and very personal... if you know what I mean.

For pricing and quality, look into pskoi ( Russ ) link, he going to Japan multiple times / year and listed every fishes with price, that what I being doing to learn and gather my budget.

Prices ranged from $300 to $3500 - I'd prefer not to list them all.

You should definitely go to Japan if you can. It was my dream trip. I went for a week, stayed in Ojiya, and visited over 30 farms/breeders - guided by Taro Kodama. Also got to check out the Nogyosai Koi show (for area breeders) on my last day. So many nice fish.

All are spectacular, but my favorites are the Kujaku and the Goshiki.

      Sad Update

Picking up four of the koi tomorrow. The other five are dead. Four were dead when they arrived in Hawaii from Japan. Apparently they were held by US Dept of Ag for days, which we were told was very unusual and quite a few fish were lost this way (not just ours). Then I was just informed that the Kohaku was found dead this morning - likely from gill rot. We are very disappointed. The only survivors (so far) are the Isa showa, the kujaku, the ginrin ochiba and the sumi sakura.

We were refunded the cost of the koi and dealer commission for those that died during shipping (but not the shipping). I don't know if Kodama had/has insurance for such losses. He said the DOA isn't doing anything for him. The others have been at the Kodama farm here in Hawaii for a few weeks where they were tested for KHV and quarantined. Apparently the quarantine period had just ended when the kohaku was found dead this morning. My wife is arguing with Kodama about a refund for that one. Too much stress for me . =-(

I'm sorry you're having such trouble. It must be an awful end to what I'm sure was an exciting trip.
I've never heard of a live fish shipment being held for days, that is horrifying.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

To me someone needs to be held responsible. Those were lives.

I’d file a complaint for an explanation at least, if possible some sort of compensation from the authority who caused the delays.

I'm not sure what happened - don't want to conjecture, but am grateful that Kodama made us mostly whole for our misfortunes. If it was something with USDOA or customs, I leave it to him to pursue. It was a wonderful trip. Wonderful people and experiences that I will always remember. Just sad that some of my beautiful babies didn't make it to their new home.

Sorry for your loss on this one, but glad to see you are not letting the end spoil the journey that found those fish to begin with.
