My Pond Mutt - $100 Kohaku Development & Future!

      Hi everyone,

Just did a water change today and netted out a couple of koi to see how they have developed!

$100 Kohaku I got from Koi Enterpise earlier this year. Not sure of the breeder, didn't ask. Only know that it's from Niigata. First picture is when I first got it, around 7-8 inch on May 11th 2019. Today it is 12 inches long.

I do have a couple of questions about the future of this koi. First picture below is when it was a baby and second picture indicates areas of my concern.

      1. How do you think these two areas will develop? Do you feel that the beni is breaking?

      2. Is the hump on its spine / back normal?

This should help with the hump question:

As far as the Beni, nobody knows for sure. I think a better eval will be when it is spring time. If the area fills in, you may be good. If not, that's a pretty good sign it won't heading into the warmer months.

Just wanted to say this is definitely not a "pond mutt". I like it's pretty tall body.

BTW, where did you get your blue bowl? Is this one of those Asian supermarket bowls?

Thank you. I guess my fish’s head is short lol.

I wonder if these pics from mid May would help in determining which direction the Beni is heading?

      This area was always suspect.

Beyond that, it's fine to push for growth but not all koi have the genetics to handle the growth and hold their beni. The photo above may be one indication that this koi will not do well with fast growth.

Nice fish, I do agree with the beni concerns. Based on my very limited experience seeing how beni evolves, I would say that the beni on the fish will shrink/disappear quite a bit more as it grows. It probably won't lose all of it's color but it will not look the same a year or two from now.

I also bought 2 Kohaku from Koi Enterprise around the same time you did. One failed miserably in just a few months. Ended up giving it away a few weeks ago:

      When I bought it:

      And a few months later:

This other one from Koi Enterprise is doing really nice however. To me the beni looks pretty good, soft with deep coloring and doesn't appear too hard. I really hope this one lasts.

      Also about 12" today.

Pretty cool! So you are a local in Sacramento CA? Do you happen to know which breeder our fish are from?

Yes...the beni on your Kohaku looks solid. It's very much a hit or miss. I have bought a Goshiki from Koi Enterprise too but that one has its beni completely faded away...

I am confused still, when I compare the two pictures, when it's a baby to now, it looks like the beni is filling in the scales. Wouldn't this mean that the beni is improving? I think I will see how (if it even would) improve over the winter and maybe slow down the growth rate for next Spring / summer, and hope for the best.

I don't know, I actually think it's shrank a bit. Check this out, I tried to superimpose the before & after on top of each other and made a GIF. Obviously the scale is off because the fish has grown but it kinda showed how the beni has changed over time.

This thread may be of interest:

      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showt...Kiwa-and-Sashi

Beni can develop in different ways depending on type. I think we see Marizome most frequently but the bottom line is yes, the Beni is consolidating to its ability and scope but the scope is not providing what we covet which is a solid red pattern.

IOW, this consolidation does not equal a desired result and consolidation is not providing even Beni.
As I said before, given the earlier pic, I don't think this fish will fill in the area totally. Even if it does recover some over the cooler months, I believe it will always be a weak point in the pattern.

Aight. I am okay with that area breaking but hopefully the rest of the area will hold Urgh kinda worried about it now.

If you got yours from Koi Enterprises' tosai tanks, it's either from Suda or Yamasan(Yamazaki). Considering it's a Kohaku I'd say the latter.

Here's my Yamasan Kohaku that I got from a different dealer. Ours all seem to have very similar body shape & "big body" patterns. If memory serves me right, I read in a Japanese magazine that Yamasan incorporates Dainichi bloodline. However since this breeder is a mass producer that makes quite a number of varieties, I doubt that his Gosanke will become "jumbo" considering the very crowded conditions they're raised in.

I personally like his selection but you really can't expect much of quality & future potential from mass producers...or mostly any other $100 Gosanke

Very nice koi. Love the beni.

I wish they could have bred some kohaku with less "big body" pattern...the big hi plates get boring fast...
