      My 2019 Babies

Hi Everyone - it's been a while since I posted. This year i decided to try my hand at spawning my koi. Every year we have mass spawning in the main pond and I always get a few survivors and it's always fun raising them so this year I bought a 12' diamter Intex pool. Added a pump and a home made filter with matala mats, and bioballs. Added an air pump. Selected the parents:

The mommy is a Hosakai kujaku that I got from Russ in 2012. Dad 1 is a showa, and Dad 2 is a Yamato both from Kodama.

The spawning took place a week before memorial day - it took about 5 days for them all to hatch. I was surprised to see results.

We harvested the babies last Saturday 10/19/2019. This is about 4.5 months of growth.

Here are pics of the crew who helped with the harvesting.

      First Pic = Kohaku group
Second pic = Yamato or kin showa group (I think)- some of the little guys have great potential (once they grow a little).
Third Pic = Hariwaki group - One of my favorite is the Tancho at 7 Oclock. He's only 3 inches - but WOW!

Now for some of the larger kids. Most of these were in the 6-9":

These were the biggest at 10-12". I would have never imagined that they could grow to 12" in less than 5 months - in my little backyard amateur set up... The Yamabuki was the 12 incher.

And last but not least are my favorite of the bunch. Let me know what you think!

I harvested about 275. I was amazed at the variety that came out this pairing.

Hi Rain - I remember Russ saying that a lot of folks asked about that Kujaku when she came out of the mud. This is a pic of her from Fall 2015. I didn't get a chance to take a more recent pic, but she's got quite the body..

To be honest - I was expecting 4-6" as well. I used to hear people buying jumbo tosai from japan but had no idea that it was possible in my backyard breeding...

Yep...I've still got my little green hulk from the ikeage experience.
He's tiny and doesn't take up too much space so he has remained all of these years.
