If I were placing bet between the two, I would take the second one. Beni looks iffy on the first one. The second one has a better body.

Agreed. Second looks to be the better fish from these angles.
The first one looks like it may have a crooked head and might be a little twisted.

      Do you have baby photos?

Thanks for the commentst. just to be clear, they are from Murata not Marudo-
here are the early tosai picks from the spring- I am keeping these long term but looking for input on them to be able to use learning, so appreciate the input.

      I need

Beautiful skin on #1. The beni didn't change much after one season so that improves the confidence level it will stay.

Rain might be onto something. In every picture of #1, the head looks off the same way.

Thanks. I don't see the crookedness outside the first pic and thought that was the angle, but that was why I asked for comments. I'll watch it more over the next year. Tosai swim so fast never get to see them long enough to observe more than what's in the photo.

Do you think the shoulder of the other is going to be a problem area or do you think the skin might thicken up over that area? It looks a little messy to me right now.

Years ago, Rain pointed out my Dainichi showa had a crooked head. He was proven absolutely correct once I took a closer look at the fish. Rain can spot crookedness. Like you said, the pictures of #1 were taken at an angle so it could be just that. From the pictures, it looks like the bones around the right eye might be higher than the left side. To really tell, you will need a picture with fish pointing to 6 o'clock.

No idea if beni near the shoulder of #2 will clean up. I am learning about Murata fish myself. Mine actually gained secondary beni in the shoulder after one season. Here is the before photo. I do like the body of Murata fish. He has add more strength to typical sensuke body.

I see what Rain is seeing. It's slight and is often difficult to see in tosai. I had a lovely little Momotaro Showa that was similar though frankly, that one was more pronounced than this one.

But if you can't see it, it is not crooked.

What's more heart breaking is to raise a good quality female to 60cm then she develops eggs unevenly.

The hobby can be rough, sometimes, no doubt. I think Mr. Murphy (and his luck) spend way too much time in our hobby.

Agreed. But after you spend years, maybe decades, chasing unicorns...you'll come to realize that every koi is perfect

Thanks all. One day some of this knowledge will seep through my thick skull lol. Until then, I'll keep buying what I like and hope I'm heading in the right direction. Sometimes I let Russ set me straight a little and ask for insight on the best of my two worst picks. I am grateful he told me to pick the taniguchi gin rin showa over another kohaku I ran by him too.
