Solar cover - should I worry

      Hey all,
I think id like to buy this cover to help ease the fish through fall, winter, and spring. I am worried about it being chemically treated. I am not worried about aeration as it will only be used in cold temps and will have holes for a heater, intakes, waterfalls, and will be used in conjunction with my aerated bottom drains. What are your thoughts?

and you need to worry about a fish getting trapped on top of the floating solar blanket and dying.

I don't think a good idea. I have heard of Koi getting trapped on top of the blanket. You are thinking of providing holes to make it easier.

I used the 16mil one this year from there. I don’t lay it on the water I build a frame above the pond and lay on top of that. Temps dropped 40 deg this weekend, water only dropped a 1 1/2deg. I used greenhouse plastic in the past and like this better because it’s so heavy the wind doesn’t move it around much.

I use something like this. I get mine free off of Craigs list. Swimming pool people replace them pretty often. And give the old ones away or sell them pretty cheap. I have used one for 3-4 years. Never had any issues with fish getting on top of mine. Mine goes edge to edge but when I am still feeding I fold a corner back to feed in that area. My pond is still at 65 here in Minnesota.

I use these clear reinforced ones with grommets (see link below). I place pool pillows below them to keep it off the water. I then use large plastic stakes (got from home depot) and use bungee cords to attach tarp to stakes. Works like a charm. I do slice some holes in a few spots so when there is rain or snow it has somewhere to drain.

I build a frame with wood and pvc pipes. I lay the solar blanket on top. I have used this for several years with no problems. Helps to keep the cold and wind off the
      water.

For our semi-raised pond I drape a clear pool cover over it on New Years Day and keep it on until mid to end of March. The cover goes to the ground on all sides and floats on the surface. It definitely keeps the wind chill off. I keep. the air domes running as the air pumps are delivering relatively warmer air below the cover.

Just wanted to show you a pic of how i do the cover with a pool pillow. First is net for leaves, then clear tarp is placed right over that. This way if there is a warm day in the fall, i just peel back clear tarp a bit and net is still there to prevent leaves from getting in since filtration is off.
