Is this the green-eyed flying purple people eater or just a lovable smiling axolotl? She's a little over a year old and about 9 inches long.

I got batch of eggs a couple of weeks ago from breeder, and the first two to hatch hatched today. Others should hatch over the next two or three days but it could be as much as a week. They start off this small when they hatch, but in three months they should be 2.5 to 3.5 inches long! For comparison, I put the end of a pencil next to the first hatchling, and the end of a turkey baster.

The babies that I posted at the start of this thread (post #1) were three months old on the 11th of this month. They were a couple of weeks old in the pictures as contrasted to the newly hatched ones (post #24) in the previous post. Here are some pics of a couple of the babies (in post #1) at 3 months old. Cute, aren't they? For their full look the picture of two side by side are also shown.

Not quite 3 weeks old, the new babes are growing well. The leucistic babies look like they are bug-eyed, but the albino babes look like they are blind. Because of the eyes, the leucistic babies (lucies) seem to have a defined head. but the albino babies show an almost "invisible head. Look carefully. Can you tell which one is the albino in the picture?

The juveniles are showing off today, after having lunch and a water change. If you look on the web, many posts make it look really hard to keep these guys, but it is not. Regular feedings, fairly , cool temps, and weekly water changes are the main things to deal with. Love the smiles! Interested? Contact me.

Yes, I do breed them. They are usually sold and shipped when they are from 3” to 6” inches long. I have some ready to sell now. They are axolotls, a salamander that never grows up. They are amphibians but they stay in water their entire lives, unlike other salamanders, They grow to 12-13 inches long and are mature at around 9-12 months but occasionally they are older than that. They are used a lot in research because of their regenerative properties. They can lose body parts and they will regrow them. They are carnivores, and as pets are generally fed earth worms, black worms, or pellets. They lay eggs, which when hatched the babies are like tadpoles with no legs, and the front legs grow first and then the back legs grow. Unlike frogs, the axolotl keeps its tail, as do other salamanders.

Another journey begins. These eggs were laid on Jan. 5th. They are beginning to "bean," which means that the baby axolotl is beginning to take shape from the round shape it started with. Those white, bean shaped things are the babies in the eggs. The eggs are enclosed in a round gelatin like ball where the baby develops until hatching in a few weeks. The eggs are similar to frog eggs. It is interesting to watch because you can actually watch the baby develop inside the egg.

These babies are now 6 weeks old and about two inches long. They are now eating live black worms. They will be really cute with their big beadie black eyes.

Newly hatched axolotls are must often fed baby brine shrimp, but they have t learn to hunt them. Because of that, they need to be put in small containers. They need to reach the surface of the water also, so the water level is shallow, only a few inches deep. And finally, due to the brine shrimp dying in fresh water and soon starting to decompose as well as ammonia produced by the baby axolotls bodily functions, they cannot be over crowded. As they grow, they need to be moved to bigger containers, with fewer babies in each container. in the meantime, they are housed in small containers with about 25 in each one. Next week they will be changed to about 15 per container.

I bought the larger containers to move the babies into as they are now almost an inch long. They are filled with water and sit aging for a day or two before I move the axolotls into them. They are beginning to be crowded in their current containers. When I move them I will get a count update, as I have lost a few along the way. I plan on also trying to separate them according to current color.

I contracted with a local pet store to sell them the larger juveniles that I have kept, as well as the ones that are now two months old. I will keep a few but not many. It will be hard to let them go, but space is limited. There are plenty of babies to fill the tanks once the older ones are gone.

I took 20 of these 2 inch long little guys to the pet shop today. No matter how many there are, you still hate to let them go. Here a couple of pics with a few of them looking into what appears to be mirrors.

This is a pic of an axolotl I purchased recently. I named her "Glowbug." She is a gfp leucistic variety. Even without a black light she seems to be radiating the green glow.

It looks like you are doing very well with them! They are really cool and I’d get some from you if I didn’t have so many other things to take care of.
