One of the oddities about Axolotls is their ability to regrow severed body parts and organs. Most of the time the part regrows almost perfectly, but sometimes he grows a limb or foot back wrongly. Here is a Golden albino that I acquired that has an “extra” hand growing out of its front right elbow, so it has 5 hands or feet.

These little cuties are a month old and a little over an inch long. These are melanoid axanthic coppers, MAC for short.

MY SIL breeds them also. My DD decided to keep one as a pet for a few months to see what is involved so she can be more informative to her DH's customers. The one she picked out is the Wild GFP and it has green eyes and is the kind that will glow green under a blue light. GFP stands for Green Fluorescent Protein which is a special protein that pops out in the genome structure of some axolotls. She wants to gain firsthand experience with the cooling fans so she will know best what to recommend! The house is 71.8 degrees and the fans have cooled the water to 64 degrees.

Meet Emerald "because of her green eyes" aka Emmy!

I am starting these little guys on pieces of European earthworms. I cut the worms into about quarter inch pieces but then realized they were way too big, so I cut them in half. Still big but if they can fit them in their mouth they will eat them! will try to cut the pieces even smaller tomorrow!

These have a kind of prehistoric look to them. I can see how they would grow on you.

The little guys shown on post 145 are now big enough to sell, and they are looking fantastic! These are the gfp MACs! They will glow neon green under a blue or black light, and look greenish yellow under normal light.

Here are some pics of some of their siblings that did not inherit the gfp gene so they do not glow under the blue of black light.

When this guy (it is a male) was young, a sibling bit part of his front leg/arm off. The leg grew back but it also grew an extra hand! his new leg/arm works fine but I’d ones have that extra hand that is just there. Others had appendages grow back normal, but sometimes one has to show off! 🤣

This guy, a copper axolotl has a new home in Colorado along with a sibling. I am glad they arrived safely and are now in their new home. Enjoy your new home, little ones!

The two copper axolotls made it safely to Colorado, despite takin an extra day, and frigid temps. The same day that I sent those two to Colorado, I sent two axolotls to Miami Florida. A big difference in temps. The two that went to Florida were the same size as the ones to Colorado, and one was also a copper, but the other was a lucy a leucistic. They also arrived safely..

A few days ago, one of the young men who takes care of the axolotls asked me when I was going to get more eggs to hatch and grow out. Good question! Axolotls raised from eggs require more of your time than ones that are already three months old. But that is not a real problem but the problem right now is, it is hard to get the black worms they feed upon. There other other things to feed the hatchlings, but they really need the black worms for nourishment and black worms are easy to feed them, IF THEY ARE AVAILABLE. Right now they are hard to find, and very expensive. So I am waiting to get more eggs. Hatchlings are fun to watch as they grow and develop but it is not fair to the babies if you can't feed them.
