They are interesting to watch them as they grow their front legs then their back legs like tadpoles, put they do not lose their tales. From there they grow to about 10-12 inches long and develop their personalities.

Thanks! What an awesome thread. Brought back some old memories.
I worked at a "Tropical Fish Wholesaler" in NJ back in my late teens. We sold Axolotls and from time to time, one would escape into the drains (a gutter system built into the floor all the way around the warehouse, 2 channels cut down the center and covered with boards). From time to time, we'd find a few and always assumed they were breeding under the boards. We found many critters under the boards from time to time... Blue Crayfish, Electric cats, Axolotls, Polypterus, the occasional dragon goby and every now and then a Mudskipper!
What ever we found, we were allowed to keep too!
At one time, I had half a dozen Mudskippers but was having trouble getting a few to eat so I packed them up and drove over to the Bronx Zoo and Donated them! I spent a lot of time there and knew a few of the staff back then.

And sorry for Reviving an old post... I'm new and exploring :-)

Thanks, Paulzie67. I don’t know how long Axolotls have been in the pet trade but I have wanted one from the first time that I saw one. . And so the story began.

With Minecraft's new axolotl character, the popularity has soared. Here are two of my latest juveniles. The black eyed one isw a leucistic and the orange eyed one is an albino.

Two new “clutches” produced yesterday and today. The eggs are from a 1) copper/MAC cross and 2) a dirty leucy/dirty leucy cross. Both clutches should produce nice offspring!

Yes, you would have to have a chiller. And they are not inexpensive here so I would doubt you would find one very inexpensive there. They are an interesting animal to keep.
