Since I just got in some axolotl eggs, I thought I would show how the axolotl starts out in life. The axolotl eggs start out much like frog eggs, with a yolk inside of a clear outer covering but the yolk can be gray or white or even black. They are round but in a matter of a week or so the axolotl yoke starts to take shape. It is called "starting to bean," because of its bean-like shape. After approximately 2 weeks, the baby axolotl hatches. And is about 1/4 of an inch long.

Hope there are "sparks" here. I paired these two up today. A GFP golden albino and a wild.

I had paired the two up in a 10 gallon aquarium, but it was too small so I moved them to a 20 gallon long. No romance yet. Maybe I should try a different pair.

Doing a partial water change today I stirred up Glowbug's water, and in doing that she got some of the debris on her. Do you think she is trying to tell me she needs a bath?

On Oct. 8 I got in the shipment of 33 eggs that I had ordered. One egg had already hatched when i got it, and it is doing fine. Three eggs were not good, and not developing. Most likely, not fertile. The remaining eggs have been hatching a few at a time, with the last one hatching yesterday morning. It took over a week, but all 30 eggs have now hatched and the babies are doing well! Now begins the difficult part. Keeping the young healthy and alive is challenge at this stage, as they are highly susceptible to fungus, brought on mainly by temperature changes in their room. They do not like their water getting above 68*. The next event will be when they grow their front legs in a few weeks.

Tried the female with another male. The new pair, a female wild and a male melanoid, produced eggs and the eggs have been moved to another tank, actually two tubs, to hatch. In the move, two of the babies managed to hatch out of their eggs, one of them may not make it, but who knows. This is the first breeding of the female, and the second breeding for the male so i am not sure what to expect from the babies, but I suspect the mom was from a clutch which had all morphs in it and the male also, so these may have a variety of morphs as well. I hope so at least. My one-two week old babies are doing well, and are copper morph crosses. Also, I got in eggs Saturday that are a bluegill leucistic /copper cross. All of these babies should produce some interesting axolotls.
Pics are of the babies, as well as the new eggs I got in on Friday. The embryos in the egg are on a blue background and can easily be seen. The babies are on a brown background making them harder to see, but i hope you can see their cuteness anyway.

Here is the first hatchling that hatched out almost three weeks ago. Also a couple of the ones that hatched on the 11th. Out of the 30 eggs, one hatched in shipping on the 8th, 11 hatched on the 11th, and the rest hatched a few every day almost for over a week, with the last 3 hatching on the 18th. 11 days of time! I find this interesting. I have them separated by date hatched to see if there is much growth difference but so far it does seem to be much.

Yesterday, things exploded! Not any tanks or tubs but their was an explosion in numbers. The 30 two week old babies are doing great, but having them divided according to when they hatched could be a problem for room. Yesterday, 6 of the eggs I got in last week hatched and they are in container. There are 15 more of those eggs that should hatch over the next few days. From the breeding here last week of the melanoid wild male and the wild female with hundreds of eggs produced, 79 babies hatched yesterday. This was to be expected. However, in haste i thought i returned my female wild back to the female tank with my other two females, but by accident I put the male in with the other two females, and i do not know which female abused him, the copper or the GFP wild, but i found hundreds more of eggs in the tank yesterday! I got the eggs out and into a tub, but will need to divide them into two tubs because of the number. So from the first clutch of eggs that were laid about 10 days ago and the ones yesterday, i my have as many as 1000 eggs! Axolotls are definitely productive, although not all will survive. I am not sure if the eggs laid yesterday are fertile, however, because as of now they are all white embryos. if not, that's okay. I did raise over a hundred out of 200 last year however.

I had 80 eggs to hatch the first day, 10-29-2020, and 115 to hatch 10-31-2020 with more still to hatch. This is from the Gator/Swamper breeding. Looks like i will have my work cut out for me to raise these babies. Daily or twice a day feedings, and tub cleanings will keep me busy. It also costs about $5-$8 each to feed them until they are three months old.

81 more eggs hatched yesterday! I do nt knw hw many re left to hatch, but just as it can take a week or longer for all of the eggs to be laid, it can take that long for the eggs to hatch.

Here two cuties that are 5.5 inches ad 6 inches long. Axolotls are like fish, they never leave the water. They have gills throughout their lifetime. A great wet pet! These varieties are called "leucistic."

In the process of research the gfp gene was introduced into some research animals which eventually got into the pet trade. This gene causes the axolotl to "glow" neon green when under a black light or a blue light. It has a slight green look when under a normal light. Here are two morphs of axolotls with this gene. the one with the black eyes is a gfp leucistic and the one that appears to have no eyes (their eyes have no color pigments) is a gfp albino.

Here are pics of my latest additions. They are called "dirty" leucistic. I got a male (Ranger) and female (Freckles), and they are not related. He is older so a little bigger. She is the one in the first picture.

Anyone interested in having one of these as a pet? I have a few that are looking for new homes. these are about 6-7" inches long, but not old enough to know if male or female. they are the spotted melanoid variety and are super cute! They are $35 each plus the cost of shipping, usually about $25. PM me if interested.
