      Big koi on a budget?

Once I have my new 7K pond up and running, I want to have big koi. I can’t afford $1000+ koi. So I know the easiest way to achieve this is by getting chagois and ochibas. But, I would like to get any tips/ideas concerning how to pick koi that will be big and how to maximize their growth. Hopefully throw in some kohaku and showa too. Thanks.

I would buy them young and looks at the selection from a single breeder and aim for the jumbo tosai which have already shown growth potential. You can also aim for breeds that typically result in larger fish like Chagoi, Ochiba, Karashigoi, and Yamabuki. Some of the dealers might have better what to look for items when picking them out. The main thing is no matter what fish you select, give them the best water quality you can. Feed regularly and change water to make sure you can help each fish reach its potential.

Check Craigslist. A lot of people in my area at least trying to get rid of 30 inch fish for under 100 dollars. The quality of the fish will be hit or miss but I'm sure you can find some you like, even if they won't take home any prizes.

Since you're in Georgia, I'm a member of the Atlanta Koi Club and we do an auction every April and there are always 20" - 25"+ fish there that people are rehoming. Single color fish like your Yamabuki, Soragoi and Chagoi tend to be much cheaper than varieties like Gosanke, but you can definitely find some steals there. The event is open to the public, so you don't have to be a member to participate

Nice! Were you able to make it to the 2019 Atlanta Koi & Goldfish Show the other weekend?

I've been in Gwinnett County for the last few years, but am hoping to move soon - fingers crossed!

karashigoi, chagoi, ochiba, soragoi, aka matsuba, platinum ogon, yamabuki ogon, mukashi ogon. I truly believe that any gosanke that has jumbo potential AND good quality will be spotted by the breeder in the first year and will come with a price tag to match. If you buy two of each of the koi listed above from breeders known for size, at 150-300/each, and keep only the females that are the largest, I bet you end up with at least 3 or 4 very large fish.
