7 year old Yamabuki just passed

First Koi death in this pond. Pond is about 7 years old and this was the first fish purchased. Noticed the fish isolating itself from the rest of the group 3 days ago. Tested the water and here are the following parameters

      Ammonia:0
      Nitrite:0
      Nitrate 5ppm
      Ph: 7.0

No ulcers, no lesions. Just slow swimming.

Came home today from work and found laying on the bottom of the pond. Pulled up the koi and noticed excess mucous near gill areas. Opened the gills and they were not red, rather white/grey in color.

Tested the water again tonight and same results as previous.

All other koi are very active and show no signs as the yamabuki.

I wish I had some words of wisdom but can only offer condolences.
Maybe look up Bacterial Gill Disease Treatment (BGDT). Discolored gills
sounds like that may be what it is.. I hope there are no more losses.

      Thanks Steve,
I’m keeping a close eye on the rest of the herd for any signs. Strange how it was just the one Koi.

I've seen BGD do that... one fish effected now without any others, but might be a sign of a larger problem looming
in the future that might need to be addressed. Keep an eye open for any habitual places where dirt collects
and isn't able to be flushed clean. Hoping for the best for the rest of the herd.

Looks like this was BGD. I tested the water again today all looks the same as previous days. I haven’t added any new fish in over 3 years. Only thing I can think of is poop from birds or squirrels that come to the pond to drink water. One thing to note is that during heaving feeding months I do mild PP treatments about every 3-4 weeks depending if I see foam or not. Don’t think this would be an issue as I’ve been doing this for years with no issue.

I will wait as I don’t like to add other meds in the pond aside from PP.

Wouldn't jump to the conclusion of bgd. Could be other things.

BGD is just the same bacteria that creates ulcers on koi. These bacteria just eat away healthy tissue. Same as in the gills. If the gills are just gray than it is most likely due to the koi laying on the bottom of the pond and the gills turn gray. Since the poster did not mention any damage to the gills. It would be highly unlikely that is the issue. I have only seen one case of BDG and it was horrible to look at as the bacteria had eaten away a lot of the gill. You would have to have a chemical or parasite issue that would turn the gills to a pale color and that would probably (guessing) turn gray quickly once dead. This koi could have died from many different things and well remain a mystery. imo

Hi Jeff, yes it’s been quite some time. How’s your herd doing?
