      Autumnal Equinox Blooms

Just a couple from today to acknowledge the arrival of Fall and the soon to follow cooler temps. The first is a genus of primitive cactus that have never evolved to be leafless. Even more interesting...they are water loving plants. A friend collected this species growing in a flood plain alongside Echinodorus....the Amazon Sword of the aquarium trade.

The second is N caliente blooming today. Often represented to be a white tropical, it is actually has a soft yellow bloom.

Another few from today. All are moist soil lovers and do well in moist areas around a pond. The first is Griffinia liboniana, often called a mini-blue Amaryllis. It is an Amaryllid, and while the flower and foliage are beautiful...it grows more like a Hosta. Second is a Hibiscus sabdarriffa that is crazy popular in Florida now. You can see the spent bloom with the red calyces....and those are now known as Florida cranberries; people do make a 'cranberry' sauce from them, but we combine them with fresh ginger to make a tasty, tart tea. Third is an Aussie Nymph still blooming, this is N. Albert de Lestang. Lastly is a ginger known as Orange Butterfly. It is one of the Hedychium species that blooms well into fall when most commonly sold pond plants are spent.

All something to consider as fall flowers for your ponds. < g >

Here it is a month past the equinox already! As a rule it takes awhile here after the "official" arrival of Fall, for cooler temps to arrive. Humidity is less than that of the tropical summer, but we are still reaching into the 90's.....93 today. That being said, it does allow me to enjoy some blooms in my woefully neglected ponds.
