I have kept orandas outside over the years. Some in an uncovered 5,000 gallon pond, but now I usually put them in my 17,000 gallon pond that has a greenhouse cover over it in the winter. My 17,000 gallon pond has never had any ice on it. I have not had any orandas or ryukins die from the cold here. I do acclimate them in the summer and let them adjust slowly to the changes in temperatures.
I even had some pearl scales over winter in a 1,000 gallon pond that freezes and thaws rapidly in the winter. The pearl scales had spawned when I removed them and I was surprised the next spring with baby pearl scales in the pond. I was quite surprised they survived.
I think I read on kingkoigoldfish that they are pond hardy. I saw it somewhere about the Thai Orandas, but I have searched a lot of places about them this week, so I may have read it elsewhere.
I am guessing on the sexes for now, from their pictures, since 2 of them had breeding tubercles on their pectoral fins.
I hope to breed them, but I did not get breeding pairs yet. Hopefully I will find suitable mates by spring.
Where did you get your Thai Orandas?
