      Thai Orandas

I have always loved Orandas, never had enough.

I just ordered 6 Thai Orandas that are 5 to 6.5 inches. I know very little about Thai Orandas, except they are supposed to get very large and some have very fancy tails. Looking at the images of Thai Orandas, they have many beautiful ones of various colors and patterns. They seem to be constantly working on new varieties.

Does any one here own any Thai Orandas and do you grow them outside in your pond?
      Nancy

Thai Orandas are extremely beautiful, enough to rival that of even koi (although this is coming from someone who's a goldfish person so maybe I'm biased)... You made a great choose to get some! You will love watching them swim with those beautiful sweeping tails. Where did you order them from?

I own a few Thai Orandas, and I keep them all outside over the summer now that I have a 300 gallon stock tank pond... BUT, I do not recommend over wintering them outside if the temps get under 65 degrees. Its possible they may survive, but I wouldn't suggest risking your babies to a ''maybe''. I'd bring them in in the winter - you will enjoy them 100% more this way anyways! Although, it seems you've kept orandas outside over winter before, so its your choice.

I ordered them from kingkoigoldfish.com. I also ordered one small tosakin.

I have kept orandas outside over the years. Some in an uncovered 5,000 gallon pond, but now I usually put them in my 17,000 gallon pond that has a greenhouse cover over it in the winter. My 17,000 gallon pond has never had any ice on it. I have not had any orandas or ryukins die from the cold here. I do acclimate them in the summer and let them adjust slowly to the changes in temperatures.

I even had some pearl scales over winter in a 1,000 gallon pond that freezes and thaws rapidly in the winter. The pearl scales had spawned when I removed them and I was surprised the next spring with baby pearl scales in the pond. I was quite surprised they survived.

I think I read on kingkoigoldfish that they are pond hardy. I saw it somewhere about the Thai Orandas, but I have searched a lot of places about them this week, so I may have read it elsewhere.

I am guessing on the sexes for now, from their pictures, since 2 of them had breeding tubercles on their pectoral fins.
I hope to breed them, but I did not get breeding pairs yet. Hopefully I will find suitable mates by spring.

Where did you get your Thai Orandas?

that's just more simplicity for you! I may try my hand at keeping mine outside when I have a better, deeper pond. For the mean time, I'm a big worrywart so I'll take mine inside!

I got mine from kingkoigoldfish too! I got one from a local breeder and one from another online venue, but I like my kingkoi oranda better. My only issue is the prices. They are fair, but I simply can't afford many, lol

I felt a little guilty about the price too, but this was probably my biggest splurge this year. Yep, I am conservative, and some times a tight wad, but I know my kids can't take care of me when I am old. (Mom, Grandma, can I borrow a few bucks?)

Ha, you should hear me trying to convince my parents that I'm not just wasting my money! Maybe I am... but I believe I enjoy them enough for it to be worth it.

      Hi Nancy,
KingKoi&Goldfish has one of the best goldfish variety in SoCal, you may event score the new orchid/rose tail orandas that Richard just went to Thailand to pick in Aug. Congrat Orandas are hardy, I can keep them in & out door in NorCal because we don't have freeze so often. Orandas swims a little better than Ranchu, Pearlscales... so they can compete for foods and predator evasive wise than their peers. Cheers

I realized this looked like I was asking my Mom, and Grandma for spending money, but I was referring to my children and granddaughter.

I keep telling them "Bank of Mom and Dad" is closed.

I don't believe I've ever asked a parent or grandparent for money for personal things, it never even crossed my mind, lol. Maybe because I know "Mom and Dad Bank" is closed... permanently!

and a black, this one was on sale, I am not sure about this one, because when I received it, it is not black
Not sure if color is faded from shipment, it lost the black, or a different goldfish. Looks greenish metallic, but has gotten darker in 2 days.
Here are the before shipment pictures.

Beautiful fancy goldfish. My fans are the first and third one. If you breed them, I have dibs. They are very expensive, but they are big and beautiful. I bought a few when I was living in San Jose and I had then in a 10 gallon tank with 120gallon sized filter.
