Thanks you guys. I don't have many fish left so I really do value what I have.
Pretty fish...way different from my shubunkins. I wouldn't mind adding a couple like that.
I Love shubunkins they are my favorite I used too have some beauties and still do but they are small and I dont see them much the snakes and the green herons love them too. Mine were all the long fin type. I used too have a strain of them that were dark blood red with black spots all over them amongst the lily pads they were hard too see then the herons found them and for some reason they were the ones they took first. I quit having favorites because in the country they just dont last.
Isn't that weird about the herons and snakes and shubunkins. I think that might be a really interesting survey question, because I also have found that it was my gorgeous big shubunkins that disappeared when a big old broad banded water snake took up residence in my garden to escape the flooding down in her home creek bed when I lived in East Texas. If it hadn't been for my fox terrier, Seamus, finally running her off, I think she might have completely cleaned me out of my big, lovely bunkies! As was, I lost 4 or 5 show quality fish of 8-11 inches without losing a single sarasa or koi. Things that make us say hmmmmmm.... Are they, slower? Less cautious? More often on the surface? Is it something in their flashing metallic scales that draws the predatory eye?
When I had a predator problem... It turned out to be an owl. He is still there. I had put 4 Tiger Barbs on the porch in a small pool with a not properly secured net one day. The net blew off that night. Only 1 fish remained in the morning. The tiny one that was too hard to catch.
I hear hooting at night and he ONLY strikes at night. I can leave the ponds open all during the day and there is never an issue. If it happens even ONCE at night, he strikes. I suspect very very large goldfish or Koi would be too big for him, though.
We don't have herons here and we have dogs, which keep away any four legged predators. A secure net keeps Mr. Owl from having a fishy snack. Haven't lost a goldfish to predators since I installed them.

The blue one is my favorite. I wish ALL Shubunkins looked like her.
