Please critique my first Japanese koi

      Hi all,

I'm pretty new to the fish hobby (4 months or so) and I finally got to the point of purchasing my first Japanese koi.
I already had 7 other koi in my pond but they are of lesser quality (mainly from nextdaykoi)

This new koi I just purchased from inlandkoi is a Japanese bred koi. I know it's not the traditional Kohaku pattern but it jumped out at me the first time I saw it and the price was definitely right.

It's a 7" Doitsu Sanke. I love the skin quality (feel free to disagree) and the kiwa on this koi as well. So well defined (again, to my amateur eye). Of course being a Doitsu plays a huge part in that. Hopefully it keeps it overtime through maturity

Anyhow, please fire away with your opinions about this koi.

      Thanks a lot!

PS: I'll post some picks of my pond and other koi later

EDIT: Koi pond video here: https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showt...64#post2727364

This is a very pretty fish. The fish has a big head (good thing), the fish also may be a little short (not so good). The beni on the left side of the fish near the center of the dorsal fin looks off, but may change. Over all this will be a good learning fish. The pattern is very easy on the eyes.

Thank you for the feedback! I did notice the big head (and mouth).

As far as the lenght goes, I do know Doitsu are a little shorter usually. Hoping won't be a huge problem when the fish matures.

It is a eye catching doitsu sanke. Doitsu fish has tendency to be football shaped but this one has a better body than the typical. Like Inazuma has mentioned already, the uneven beni in the mid section is a concern. The favorable outcome will be for sumi to come up at the spot and beni to stay stable.

      Thanks for chiming in!

Yes, that beni spot is most likely this fish's worst feature but I think I'll live with it. After all it will be a pond koi fish. Not planning for any showings anytime soon with the koi I have

And again, I appreciate all the critique, it's an awesome learning experience!

      Koi Pond

And as promised here is a short video of the koi pond.

The other inhabitants are as follows:
      11" Gin Rin Yamato Nishiki
      10.5" Shusui Orange
      10" Kikokuryu
10" Kohaku (this one was the worst buy, imo. poor quality - really need to get another good quality Kohaku in the future. every pond has to have one!)
      9" Doitsu Platinum Ogon
8" Doitsu Kin Ki Bekko Butterfly
      7" Shusui Blue
      +
      two comet gold fish (orange)

Take it easy in these guys. They are lower quality (not Japanese imports). They do look good in the pond though, imo (kids and wife approved)

Awesome looking as well! Definitely more sumi. Love the 2 spots on the head. Very balanced

Cute pond. What is your winter plan? Any wildlife in your area?

Lots of wildlife. The pond is literally at the edge of the forest preserve in the back of our house.
A lot of raccoons, skunk and possum. The occasional coyote and fox also. Birds are not an issue due to covering trees.

So far no fish loses in the 4 months of existence. (the only deterrent I have is a high frequency sound device which I'm not sure helps much)

The winter plan this year is to bring the koi inside (they are still relatively small). Maybe leave one goldfish in the pond along with the pet largemouth bass, the catfish, a pleco and some bluegill to experiment covering the pond with 2" foam and see how it goes.
It gets really cold here in the Chicago suburbs and lasts a good 5 months and my pond is less then 2' deep.

If you have raccoons around, the pond is too shallow to keep them from going fishing. The food might be plenty now but they will try sooner or later.

Yup, well aware of that. They do a good job hiding now (lots of rocks, little caves, plants to hide under) but eventually I'll have to dig deeper and re-do the pond as they grow.
The koi are also still a little skittish so it's harder for wildlife to get them at this point.
