      Grit makes me GRRRRR

Maybe I'm just tired, but the grit that is spec'd for the Birdman Sand & Gravel filter, what type of sand material is preferred? Is it ....

      Poultry Grit or Chick Grit

The former I can find in 25 lb bags. The later I can only find in 5 lb bags.

The chick grit is probably 1/4 to 1/2 the size of the poultry grit. Chick grit is smaller than rice, poultry is larger than rice.

You want the granite type. Most of what you find is made from oyster shells which raises PH size is not that big deal start with larger at bottom to smaller at top They make chicken to turkey sizes .find it at a country Feed store

The problem is that the definition of "country" keeps moving further and further away from cities, along with the real farm supply stores. In the cities, you have to get creative in your definition of "grit", which is just a generic term for large granulated sand that's used in many applications. Try cement suppliers, home garden supplies, builder supplies, and even roofing suppliers. It's just rock/sand; what it's called by each industry is up to them. Try to stay away from anyplace that sells it in 1-lb bags, because it'll cost a fortune.

I found #12 grit at a building supply outlet (not the same as HD or Lowes), but even then it's a bit small, so as a result, my SG filters are gradually losing sand. Next time I'm out in the country proper, I'll see if I can find some larger sized grit that doesn't boil quite as easily.

Yes, granite grit. But which size of farm bird digestive grit do I need? Poultry or chick? Adult chicken sized grit or baby chick sized grit?

I use this type. It’s about 10 bucks for 50 pounds. The problem is that the factory had a major breakdown and is way behind on orders. I use the starter size.

Thank you. I'll see if I can find this locally in Tampa, FL. Nice of the MFR to provide a scale in a photo.Name: 514.jpg

The problem is the word 'sand' confuses many people.

For sure it does. I've reach out to that mfr about getting some of their chick grit shipped to me.

Shipping will prove to be a real killer, unless you can get them to add a few sacks to the truck that's already destined for your location.

Kent Wallace's original filter used #12 sand and I think that's where it comes from. Most changed
from that to grit because blasting sand seems to be harder for a lot to find than feather rock.

I use the Grower grit. I think it is larger than the starter grit, but the filtration is still good. I've never used the starter grit, but my guess is the larger grit doesn't fluidize as easily.

I think it comes from calling the popular DYI barrel filter Sand & Gravel filters

I wasn't saying that was where the confusion came from, only why the word "sand" was used instead calling them chicken
grit and gravel filters... although Robert built a version before Kent's and he used chicken grit too I believe.

Years ago some DIY submerged rock up flow filter builders would add a layer of fine sand to the top layer to polish the water.

I found it hard to get chicken grit, so I am using fractured granite which basically does the same thing and is easier to get. You can order it from one of the big box hardware stores and pick it up at the store, saving shipping charges

I don't think they carry anything larger than 5lb bags. But doing a search of cherry stone brand turned up as a product I can get from Walmart delivered! Now I just need to decide if I go with #1 (avg 1/16") or try to find something slightly larger.
