A giant 'Caliente' at Missouri Botanical Gardens.

Nursery manager Derek Lyle has Craig's hybrid 'Caliente' in a pond all by itself because it is so huge. I visited Mobot Wednesday and I was in awe at the size of this plant. 10 inch bloom and 24 inch pads. Amazing if you could see it in person.

Beautiful I wish I could have been there and seen all of the plants I have not been there in 30 or more years maybe longer

Thanks for posting that Matt. I am jealous of your visit and thinking we might head that way next year. Last time I was there Steve was in charge, but I have met Derek and he is one heck of a nice guy. I noticed 'Avalanche' in the other post and I have to tell you ....seeing my hybrids displayed at MoBot is a huge thrill. It was reading about the work of George Pring the first got me interested in hybridizing and it is wonderful for me to see my lilies now in his "house". < g >

      You could come visit mine.

I got one from CraigP and it is growing like crazy. I absolutely love the leaves... my first bloom is popping up now actually, just cleared the water so I imagine it will open in a few days.

Ironically the Caliente stays pretty well in it's space in my pond... the red cup he gave me on the other hand is a sprawling monster!

Steve still volunteers on the weekends! Too bad I missed him. You're welcome Craig. When trops are grown to full size it is incredible. I don't think people realize just how big ALL tropicals can grow. I saw a Director Moore with a 7 or 8 inch bloom! It was like a jurrasic water lily adventure. Derek was a great host. It was great to meet him. I love Mobot. I usually go every year as it is only a 6 hour drive but I had missed the last couple of years due to family reasons. I will not ever miss a summer visit again! I am glad you still feel that thrill of having your lilies displayed at Mobot. What an honor.
