      Spawning Questions

      Hi,

I知 not breeding any koi. I知 curious about the cycle and have not found answers online.

For young koi, 1-2 years old, do the females start producing eggs?
If no spawning occurs, will they at some point in time release their eggs?
Is egg bound condition due to health/environment issues?

What age do koi instinctively know to spawn?

Like if the female is mature with eggs, male is not ready, no spawning
occurs. The females by nature discharges the eggs anyway?

      Just my opinions ...

I think for the larger ones, probably yes at a year (though not many eggs). For 2 years, almost surely.

Usually not, though egg release can happen in rare circumstances without a male present.

I don't know. I am not experienced with egg bound condition.

Size might be a factor as well as age, but I have seen one-year-old males as small as 9" joining in flock spawns with older koi.

Usually not without a male (though in a naturally lake, there would almost always be males). In late summer, females may start consuming the nutrients from the eggs within their bodies. So they can grow a little faster if they don't spawn.
