      5 step Kohaku?

How does this one look? The lack of Beni on the rear left balances with the lack of Beni on the front right?

I’m kind of worried about the Beni stability on this one. Both Sashi and Kiwi have issues.
I don’t agree with your pattern assessment, I’m afraid. The blank space will be huge on a more mature koi.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

The beni looks so similar to a fish I bought in a grow out many years ago I thought I'd post a comparison pic that
      I saved:

I actually made a collage of your photos and keep it as a reference for Beni progression

holy smokes, that is crazy. I would have never guess that fish would lose all of it's beni. Are there hints/ tells that lead to that? Greatly appreciated

Great job! I hope it's okay I saved it to the file I have for his pictures.

I wish I knew more but will only add that every fish that I've bought with a hard, scalloped shaped beni seems to go south.
Hopefully knowledgeable people will comment because I'm not one of them.

Most of us up here knew that beni loss is caused by many reasons due to stresses.
Also the hints for good quality beni is on kiwa and shashi but hey if you can provide optimal condition and environment the beni may last longer
Yep I would pass on this sawtooth looking edge and unbalance pattern
      Great demonstration to icu2

I can agree to that even though I have very little time under my belt understanding how beni develops. This is a showa I bought a few months back before I had any idea on what to look for. Folks mentioned that this hard beni would not last and I can definitely see signs of it already as the red color appears to be stretching and thinning out. Hope I get a few good years out of him before he goes full Utsuri.

This is what he looked like back in March. The signs are pretty obvious now that I've spent some time doing research.

What resource did you find most helpful? Searching KP with the tag “beni”? Experience over time growing out fish? All of the above helps, I realize. As a newbie, I’d love to know more (without becoming too overwhelmed/confused).

Yeah this site is a great resource, lots of old threads with very useful info. But I find the search feature on this forum is not that great. I usually like doing a Google search for a specific website. For example type this into Google: "kiwa beni site:www.koiphen.com"

Some suggested search terms that will bring up a gold mine of old info:

      pink beni
      kiwa
      sashi
      kamisori kiwa
      maruzome kiwa
      hard beni
      elastic beni

Thank you for sharing that information - I’m settling in for an evening of koi observations and research

vBulletin stock search function is not great but we have a custom Google search too that can be accessed by clicking on

I feel often we like terms like 4 or 5 step and just look at that when we are new to the hobby. I still do like step pattern and have a small kohaku i love and the sashi is crisp but also very small still and and perhaps why the beni Is still nice .

I am learning more about Beni now...luckily the Kohaku I picked (yes, I am a noob, it is just a pond quality fish lol) back a couple of months ago still has its Beni going strong other than the color being more orange than red.

I got this kohaku on May 11, 2019. The third picture was of it from this week. It has grown at least 2 inches in the past couple of months.

The goshiki I selected (Urgh, I am learning...slowly) a month back has its Beni breaking. Looks to be having the saw pattern like you have mentioned. Taken only one month apart!

Aside from Beni quality, something that is relevant for them is water quality and the water temperature.
Water temps too high can break even high quality stable Beni.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn
