What bit my wife?

Figured this was the best place to ask for bug identification but I apologize if it’s not. In any case the other day we were in the yard near my pond and my wife got bit by something. She swatted it off and it landed on her a second time and bit again. It left nice sized marks and hurt a lot. Pic attached of what she says bit her. Any ideas what it might be?

All kidding aside it looks like some type of water bug is my guess.

Could it be this creature? It appears to have no wings for a 2nd attack.

This appears to be a dragonfly larva.

They live just below the surface in your pond.

Wasps, as we call them this side of the pond bite, not sting.

The bite is very painful and appears to leave a toxin to remind you.

It just happened to land on another part of her when she pushed it off (unlucky for her). I was thinking it could’ve been dragonfly larva as well.

I don’t know how it got onto her so not flying might be okay as it could’ve crawled on. Being 100% aquatic could pose a problem since she wasn’t swimming in the pond . I thought however that they became less than 100% aquatic as they approached maturity?

They do crawl out of the water to pupate. Pretty sure they cannot fly until they become actual dragonflies.

Here is another evil one. Horsefly larvae. Bites like a snake and hurts like heck.

I thought I was saving a caterpillar.
