Thumbs up Calling all Green Thumbs!

Are there any experienced green thumbs out there that have a solution for the biggest issue facing koi ponds to date. WEEDS!!! Are there any home remedies or safe weed killers that can be used around the pond, or am I stuck getting on my hands and knees?

      Thanks for any suggestions!

Ones that are really pesky and right next to the pond, I've used a combination of straight vinegar and salt both together.
Probably more of both than was needed but killed 'em quick.
I've read of mixtures with the same vinegar and salt diluted with water and used in a spray bottle, but I never had much
luck with it... so I try and pull when I can but get rid of ones I can't with salt, vinegar, or both.

Household vinegar (acetic acid ) is usually 5% strength. You can get 20% agricultural mix and sometimes 30% for the tougher weeds. I've never had much success with 5%.

Personally, I would not use salt in the mixture if you plan to grow anything else in the spot because it is hard to leach out of the soil. Soap is OK and help break the surface tension and allows the mixture to soak into the plant material better.

I personally just use roundup if I don't just manually remove them. According to the MSDS sheet aquatic toxicity for bluegill & trout is about 8 PPM, or about 1 oz per 1000 gallons, which would have to actually be in the water, so spraying around the pond on should be fine as long as you don't dump it straight into the pond. Spraying pesticides around a pond is what gets you in trouble.

Thanks for the recommendation on stronger vinegar avorancher. Ill check out my local store.

Danzcool- You know I never even thought to check the MSDS about reactions with aquatic life. I just figured if it can kill super stubborn weeds then it will definitely kill my fish. Then again I don't even like my grass clippings blowing by the pond when mowing the grass. I guess I'm just a worry wart.
