      Hikui

Last year my Kohaku has a light blemish on her head. It looked like a thicker area of slime coat. I wasnít worried. Now the center seems brown, necrotic, and malformed. Iím confident it is hikui (yes, itís on the Beni) I am planing to aggressively remove all tissue that looks abnormal. I have heard it is a skin cancer so I am going to leave large margins in the hope I can remove it all. Hopefully a razor and a scalpel will suffice, but Iíll have a Dremel on hand if itís deeper than I think. Is this an appropriate plan? Has anyone had success with this disease?

Just let it be, and move on.

Thank you KDH, great reads. The first article gives me hope that I can stop its progression. I may try a scalple then cryotherapy. I dont think I can get my hands on a cautery agent aside from silver which I dont want to use.

@Coolwon, Im not trying to make her prettier, im trying to remove the cancerous tissue to halt the progression. Compromised tissue will make her more susceptible to infection. Right now its smaller than a pea, but they tend to grow and form deep nasty ulcerations.

@OCKoifan, I dont consider Hikkui "normal" progression. From the studies done, it seems it's a neoplasm that has been correlated with, and hypothesized to be caused by, a virus. The recomendation is to destroy the affected tissue to prevent transmission and progression of the leasions.

It would be nice if you take pictures and documents the surgery for future reference

I have had quite a bit of experience with Hikui but unfortunately no success treating it.

I think that it is genetic and probably is not contagious from my experience.

Good Luck and let us know of your progress.

So my camera man was a little late to take a good before shot and Iím always antsy to start. I removed the majority with a flexible biopsy blade and then did the margins and depth with a Dremel. I finished with H202 to oxidize any cells I missed and finished with some iodine. It was VERY vascular which supports the diagnosis. Fingers crossed I got it all. She is now 27 inches. While she was out I got rid of the shimi as well. Hopefully Iíll have an update for you by the end of the summer
