Matt, I think next time I will go with krill meal instead of decapsulated brine shrimp eggs. I just bought a pound of it to see if the smaller ones can catch up. One pound of decapsulated brine shrimp eggs was around $25 verses $17 for krill meal 60% protein. 5 lbs should be enough to get newly hatched fry big enough to consume 1/32 inch pellets.
      https://www.ebay.com/itm/Antarctic-K...rZ2ku9DFJNzE9w

The Sakai fish meal paste with honey spirulina and tofu makes my water milky, so after my initial batch is gone, I won't make anymore. I will start soaking the 1/32 inch pellets in water before i feed it to the fry, so the smaller ones can chew on it. I keep the smaller frys in my 300 gallon tank.

I found a USA supplier for koi culling nets on ebay, a set of 5 for $12, but they had only two sets left. They the same ones from Hong Kong, but shipping time from Hong Kong is way longer and questionable.

Real koi culling nets could be a handy upgrade for me. I've been adapting other nets for the purpose. I got the smallest aquarium net I could find, bent the square into a circle, and then tied up the slack in the net to give it very little depth. It works okay, but sometimes small fry get caught in a wrinkle. Not fatal, but it takes extra time to get them out.

Those in post #34 from 6 days ago are the latest I have. I'll probably take more this weekend. I noticed today their bodies seem to be thickening up, and some more variation in patterns are emerging. I've started adding some brine shrimp to their frisbee. Still a long way to go, but every day they seem to look a little different.

Have you noticed if any of them are developing scales yet? Based on your previous year(s) of growing out the fry, when do you typically see scales start to develop?

Ha! You know the thought never occurred to me that the scales may not have always been there. I thought the scales must just have been too small to see when the fry were tiny.

In the times when I have had one or more Doitsu Oyagoi in a spawn, the young koi would have all types of scales: regular, scattered, Doitsu leather, and Doitsu linear. But I would not be able to easily recognize what type they had until they were maybe 1.5" - 2". I just figured the scales had not gotten large enough to see until then.

lol i didn't think about the option of super small scales, so we're even!

I went home today with this thought in mind, super focused on some of them as they swam by, and most of the yellow ones in my tank I was able to identify some linear scales or some back by the tail. The darker ones seem to be leather, with the exception of a couple random tail scales.

Not sure if they "developed" or if I just never noticed them before. Always learning!

I netted a few today (day 45) and took some photos. I was surprised to find the 3" one that dwarfs the others. Looks like it will be hi utsuri. I moved it to the little pond with the one-year-olds for the safety of the little ones.

Yes, and there is a good bit more black on the left side at this point. Hope the markings will clean up some. They are splotchy at this point.

There are a lot more of the dark ones (showa and utsuri types), that are the best prospects, in this spawn than in last year's spawn. Last year I used much bigger koi and got a lot more fry, but the percentage of dark was much smaller. Only time will tell if the better percentage will pay off.

I've been removing quite a few with crooked tails, which is the most prevalent deformity with this batch. It's not as bad as in some spawns, but it is pretty substantial. I netted some of them for some updated photos at 8 weeks old ...

While cleaning their filter yesterday, I changed their 300 gph pump back to the 500 gph pump. I had reduced the size before they hatched to help keep them from getting pulled into it. Much less danger of that now.

The numbers are now down to a few more than 100. Most are now 1.75" to 2.25", with a few ~1.5" and a few 2.5" to 3". The first one pictured below is 5.5", and I moved it to the little pond with the one-year-olds. Its face is more narrow than its gill plates. So I have doubts as to whether it will ever look right. Sorry for the bad photos. They were quite unphotogenic today, grouping up and spashing around the edges, constantly disturbing the water surface. At least it shows they have vigor.

They are growing, not quite as fast as I would like, but making progress. At three and a half months, they average about 3" with about 95% between 2.5" & 3.5".
