Thanks Delbert, Max, and Hope. I had never spawned a female ginrin before. I had heard the ginrin gene was a dominant, and it sure looks like it. One of the two males being ginrin may be adding to the percentage.

Everything I've read says Gin Rin is dominant as well. It's so exciting watching them grow! I can't wait until mine are old enough to spawn!

Yeah Hope, I've had my eye on that one. It has only a little white, on the face. But that's okay. Mom does not have much white either.

In my previous 4 showa spawns, the females had a lot of shiro, and I got a good many shiro utsuri and very few hi utsuri. In this year's spawn, the female has a lot more orange (more butterscotch actually) than white, and I am getting a lot more hi utsuri than shiro utsuri. Not really surprising, but confirming what one might expect.

With this group narrowed to about 35, a few days ago I moved them from the tub to the 1800 gallon pond. So they have a lot more room now. But it is getting cold, and growing season it pretty much over.

Thanks for the encouragement Hope, Delbert, and Orlando.

Figuring the little ones were about through eating much for the season, and knowing a cold front was coming, last weekend I replaced the orchard netting that was over the pond with a double layer of plastic sheeting.

Then winter sent its first strong volley with a 15 F temperature yesterday morning (not wind chill, but actual) and the sustained wind was ~20 MPH with gusts over 40 MPH. It's warming back up a little now. Hopefully that was a head-fake and not just a small sample of what is coming later.

Matt, I took a KH reading this morning and when my test changed the water from blue to yellow, I put in a few pieces of crushed oyster shell and the water turned blue again. All this time, I was bent on using baking soda, I never thought crushed oyster shells would increase the KH? I put two cup full by the water inflow to my planters and barrel filters to see how long they can keep the KH at acceptable levels.
I have been neglecting my pond until I saw one of my koi with a sore on its nose. It was just as how I suspected, the KH of the pond was at zero. She healed herself after I got the KH back up.

How many gallons are in the system you are referring to Roger? After you run it for a while, please let us know how the oyster shell is holding up. I've only used it a little.

I've held up my KH with baking soda for a long time. Years ago, I had a PH crash after several rainy days. I lost a couple of koi and all the rest looked like they were suffering before I added baking soda to fix it. A rough day indeed, but I was relieved it was not a total loss. I've watched the KH a lot closer since then.

Right after that incident, I went to a friend's place and tested his two ponds which both turned yellow on the first drop and had a PH of 6.3! He was able to raise the PH with water changes and had no losses. The scary thing is, at 6.3 PH, the koi were all swimming and acting normally, giving no indication that a crash was in progress.

Thankfully the last few weeks have quite mild by comparison to that mid-November cold blast, and have not gotten much below 30 F since then. I pulled back the plastic sheeting for a while yesterday to see them puttering around, and they seemed fine.

Not much to show here this winter. We had our first substantial snow of the year about 10 days ago, though it was not all that cold. Then day before yesterday it got down to about 16 F, the coldest since that November blast. So I'm holding back on removing the plastic sheeting just yet. I'm anxiously awaiting the new growing season.

Not very big. The last time I measured them was in late September when they averaged about 3" with about 95% being between 2.5" & 3.5". Since they've been under the plastic for 3 months, I've only glanced in at a few a couple of times. But I suspect they have not grown much, so I would guess most are 3" - 4" now.

With no < 40 F temps in the 14-day weather forecast, I thought it was a good time to remove the plastic sheeting covering the little pond and replace it with the orchard netting. The water under there was way to green to see the little koi. But I wanted to see how they were doing. So I dipped a net down in one of the corners and pulled up these four at random.

The largest is 4" and the smallest (the one not pictured in the group of three) is 2.5". The other two are 3-3.5".

For an idea of how green the water is, you can tell from the upper left of the first photo that this dishpan is white. The koi are in less than an inch of water, just enough for them to swim in, and it still looks yellow-green.
