I like your set up Matt. Do you keep them in a net in the pond for easy removal? Or do you let them roam free? How deep is your fry pond and how many gallons? I was thinking of setting up something similar instead of trying to raise them in my basement, which gave off massive humidity into the house. Tanka’s for sharing.

Yeah I guess that would make for a rather humid home, having them in the basement.

This group was spawned and raised in the filtered tub in post #2. It is about 500 gallons, but I only fill it to about 350 gallons. Catching them was easy out of there. Last fall, I moved the ~35 keepers (for now) to the little pond which is 1800 gallons and about 27" deep. It is about 9' x 14 ' with sloped sides. It has a simple one stage 100 gallon filter and a 3200 GPH submersible pump. I don't use a holding net in the pond. So they roam free. But with only ~35, removal when needed won't be too big of a deal. [At least not when using my netting technique with the headlamp at night. No glare from the sun, and the koi can't see the net coming.]

In several past years, I have spawned and raised them in the little pond. That's a lot of work for sure chasing thousands around when they have that much room to run. Believe me, I noticed how much easier it was this year in the tub. I think they grow a little faster in the pond though.

An update of the few happenings so far this spring … In early March, five of these nearly one-year-olds died in less than a week. I found them floating with no marks on them. My theory was that when the water got green, the PH started swinging between night and day and stressing them out. I know it got above 9.0 at times. So I got a replacement bulb for my UV and did some water changes. The deaths stopped at that point, which seems to support the theory I think.

Hoping their growth will improve this year, last weekend, I blended up and froze a mixture of 45 oz salmon, 15 oz mackerel, 15 oz sardines, 20 oz tuna, 15 oz pumpkin, and 15 oz English peas. They seem to be taking to it pretty well.

Yesterday, I re-homed a group of mostly two-year-olds from a showa spawn, and I included five of these one-year-olds with them. So I think there must be about 30 or so still in the 1800 gallon pond.

I went through all of these this morning for the first time in many months. I re-homed 27 of them and plan to post photos of those later. For now I am only keeping these 4 (5"-6"), one of which I really like.

Thanks Delbert. Maybe with the numbers reduced > 85% the growth will pick up. And they have 1800 gallons to themselves.

Here are some shots of the 27 that I re-homed yesterday. All are ginrin and about 4"-7". A couple had gills that were a little curled in or flared out and a couple had noses that seemed too pointy. The ginrin and sumi generally seemed good. Some were re-homed due to the pattern not being laid out like I prefer, such as a large solid colored area on one side. Several had orange that was not very solidified, but more somewhat speckled with white. I've noticed that the sumi seems to look better in the pond than in the tub, as if they get a little stressed from being netted and lighten up some.

I netted the 4 one-year-olds this morning and got my first good look at them in 2 months. Back then, when I re-homed 27 of their siblings, they were 5"-6". My hope was that with 1800 gallons to themselves, feeding on some pellets, but mostly on ample quanities of the high protein seafood blend, that their growth would pick up, which it did. Three were now 9"-10", having added 4", slightly exceeding my expectation. I moved these to the 12,000 gallon pond. I thought they would be scared and hang out around the pipes at first. But right away, they swam out to the middle with the adult koi, like they belong there.

The other showa, pictured at the bottom, is in treatment for an infection. It had grown from 5" to 8", which is okay, but less than the other three.

Sorry for the low-light photos. It was early morning, since about the only way I can catch them is while using an LED headlamp at night. That stocky hi utsuri is a real jumper. Twice it lept a good 3 feet above the surface. The second time I brought the net out of the water and caught it mid-air.

Your fish have great gin rin. I've never seen an adult showa with that kind of sparkle. Does it typically dull over time?

Thanks Sean. I like that it has motoguru on the pecs and significant amounts of the three colors on each side. Not a lot of orange, but it is prominently placed.

Thanks PFG. You know, I have occasionaly heard people say that ginrin koi never shine as good as when they are little. I have not really noticed that myself. Maybe the fact that the adult fish are bigger with much more of a visual prescence, distracts me from them not having as much shine. And perhaps they have more shine overall than little koi, but since they are so much bigger, the shine gets diluted (more shiny surface area, but a lower percentage of shine per square inch). I'm not sure. Maybe I'll see if I can get some new photos of the parents in the sun for comparison.

Well so far I am having difficulty getting close, large, in-pond photos that clearly show the ginrin on the parents. They shine, but the photos don't seem to distinguish the scales. Seeing them with my own eyes, I can tell they have a lot of ginrin, though I am finding it difficult to compare it relative to koi that are much smaller. I'll keep looking and also try to get better pictures.
