      Sarasa Comets

My local Petsmart has a bunch of orange and white comets in with their large size feeder goldfish. Are these considered Sarasa comets, or is there something special about how Sarasas are bred that makes them different/better than these? I know that the nicer Sarasas are red rather than orange, but can these orange ones change to more red over time?

Thanks Gander, I decided to give them a try. Bought 6 and have them in the 100 gal. stock tank in the basement. They are almost 3" long now. I'll grow them out for a month or so and hopefully get them up to 4" before I put them in the pond later this summer. They look real nice to me. I'm glad I can still enjoy $.31 cent fish. That's a real asset in this hobby!

They look nice. Once you move them outside, the red will get brighter & deeper. The white will get brighter too.

I have kept Sarasa comets for over 20 years. I have some that are 12 to 14 inches long.
Your fish were in with the feeder goldfish so watch them very closely for disease. They may do very well.

Will do. I've lost one already. I went down last night and 4 of them had jumped out. I was there in time to save 3. Now I have a net over the tank. None of my fish ever jumped last winter when I kept them in this tank, so never even thought of covering it. Still learning.

I also found some attractive goldfish in the over-sized feeder tank at our local pet store. Following previous advice that most feeders have parasites, I treated them with Praziquantel (Prazi) and they are growing like crazy eating aggressively.

I don't have Prazi, but I do have this. Would you treat them now or wait until they show signs of problems?

You CAN find some hidden gems even at local pet stores. One of my prettiest Sarasa comets was just a little 1 inch thing when I picked it out. It's about 6" now and its orange developed into really bright red.
