i posted pics of the crabs but this is the best one as the sun was coming up. i'm using the barn as a pump house for the lower pond, and these sargenti crabs are about 20 y.o. wedding presents. they were just sticks in 2001.

Max, it is so nice to see Spring colors again. Ours are long gone. Your trees are beautiful and have grown & filled out really nice in 20 years. They look so nice next to your red barn.

Darlene, thanks! I get a lot of offers to live in the treehouse. I prefer to be where there's a fridge, a couch and other facilities. but I do appreciate the sentiment. It was designed by me and Dave who lived for a year in the guest house. He came from a big family of boys who were all carpenters and contractors and i think Dad was an architect. While he lived here, he built the treehouse in '95. By himself. He'd put a nail in a tree, nail in another tree, balance a board, and i get lost after this but he was working from our design on a paper napkin. tricky because it needed to face the view and couldn't do that unless it was five sided. the windows and doors came from a junk store, same store where I got the stable doors for the guest/carriage house. the stairs are still stable. i thought as the tree grew it would lift the tree house in some odd way, but seems trees grow wide and get tall up the tree not like say, zinnias from ground up. It has weathered many storms in 25 yrs and except for a re-roofing, has hung in.
      Well
There was a time when my gardener at the time and her bf wanted to get married in the tree house.
      Sure!
so seven or eight people up the stairs, array ourselves, the officiant is doing the service, heather's white gown is blowing, jokes all around, and i notice this big weather front coming in from the northwest and now the tree house is starting to sway and no one is minding or scared and they shoot a look at me, and I look calm. It's just an act. I'm thinking, I "We're all going to die." but first, Heather and Skip have to get married. I wait until Heather throws the bouquet and as capt. i stay behind while the guests leave the tree house by the stairs. Rain comes in, married couple get into their just married car, guests leave behind them.
      And the tree house stands.

This pic is the string quartet from a different wedding. Mine and John's, June 9, 2001.

I don't think so, Rain. We do get mosquitos in mosquito season, but nothing extraordinary. Guessing fish take care of this?

A short-lived, aromatic, vignette. Catch it now. ;)

      fellow garden lovers,

When I bought this little patch of bulldozed property in the mid-80s, i had seen a few fruit tree tunnels on my research trips with guidebook to England. Rudyard Kipling's garden had one of wrought iron, pear trees trained on them. Sorry that I can't show you the photos because it was so impressive, but this was before digital film. i carried the picture home and in collaboration with my new friend and horticulturist, Tim Steinhoff, we installed a smaller, cheaper, manufactured tunnel. It started with a mail order tunnel of hoops from the Kinsman company, and I bought a couple dozen bare root fruit trees, six of them Empire apples for the tunnel and we were off. Tim pruned the trees first couple of years. The main rule is to keep the trees growing in two dimensions against the frame. There is a lot more to this but if you want to do it, the form is called "espalier" and although we didn't do it perfectly, it was very satisfactory almost from the beginning.

The apple tunnel was planned to provide structure and purpose. The tunnel bisects the cottage garden, providing a path of dappled shade from the entrance to the garden at the road to the courtyard and back door to the house. We under-planted the tunnel with a sunny narcissus called Hawera, long lasting (!), brightens the shade in the fully leafed out tunnel. I've included a photo of the 'from the road' entrance and a through-the-gate-view of the tunnel and the cottage garden on the oblique view.

In whatever order the pictures download, (looks like reverse order )see me, mom and dad and new apple tunnel some 30 yrs. ago.
Then, thirty years later, the vignette mentioned in the headline; Looking through the tunnel from the courtyard. Those are two Palaban lilac shrubs also thirty years old. They have small leaves and are dwarf and very ambitious. See how dense they are and for a couple of weeks, the fragrance is just amazing. See Hawera under the tunnel. Wow, mass planting can look really cool. This little daff has been in bloom for months.

Also showing the entrance to the garden from the roadside view and then, through the blue iron gate, here a shot of the cottage garden on an angle and the tunnel with a flat-top haircut.

More coming if the sun ever stays out for more than a day.

The summer garden made up for rainy spring, every rainy spring. :)

      fellow gardeners!

Early May was a total washout, rain, rain, rain. But the rest of the year had surprises in store.
A new rustic tunnel opened a view of the old barn. A doe stands in place while i go inside to get my camera! Roses and peonies went crazy in a good way. I found a silver-plated tea-set for the bears on Ebay. One of my kitties --Tommy -- poses at the side gate. That hydrangea is Tardiva. Never disappoints.
About the lilacs -- it's name is Palaban, smells unreal for two weeks. The sunshine at the feet of the apple tunnel beyond, is a small narcissus called Hawera. The peony is Coral Charm. She was planted over 30 years ago, never been moved or divided. I think still available. Poppies are somniferum-- the seeds were a gift and unknown provenance, but cheap and easy display that lasted for seems like most of the summer. The crabapples blooming near the barn (pumphouse now) are sergentii (sp?) and they were wedding gifts as twigs over 18 yrs. ago.
This is peak week for leaf peepers. End of season. My stepson took the pic of the allee. Not mine, but what a great effect if you plan 20-30 yrs ahead of time and have a long driveway!
