Sediment Trap for Natural Flow Through Clay Pond

Our pond receives run off from a nearby reservoir as well as ground water, for about 10 months of the year. We get thousands of gallons a day and it overflows into an exit drain that goes to the sewer system. The problem is the large amount of sediment that comes with the water. I have a long narrow channel that I can plant up or just put a liner in and let the sediment get trapped and the clean water flow right into the pond. Then, when the "trap" (whatever that will be) gets filled up, we can just empty it out manually, I guess. Are there different options? I'd love to make it into a bog, but not sure what would happen once the bog would fill up with all that sediment! Thanks for any advice.

For a temporary fix, try a series of straw bales in the narrow channel. Each bale will act as a dam, forcing the water thru the bale. Sediment will build up behind and in the bale, so it can be removed, and a new bale placed in the ditch. In our area the bales cost about $5 each. Name: 00i0i_dlbA4KlF4m5_600x450.jpg

This panorama shot makes the area to the right look raised but it is actually very flat. The water comes in through a broken pipe all the way to the right of the photo.
