      Getting ahead of myself but....

Living in central VA, near Richmond, suggestions for sources to obtain koi? There's a breeder in Chester VA, Koi Kouple, Dave (I forget his last name, bad...) we visited once several years ago, way, way before the pond was as much of a reality as I hope it is this year. We also visited Hanover Koi up in PA a few years back. And there there was Ray Abell, we never met him or went to his place. Funny thing is though, this was several years ago now, my wife treated his dog in her vet hospital and some time after that, when I was on a koi pond kick, she recalled that she had this client with koi ponds right near by, and it wasn't until we looked into him further that we realize what a reputation he had. He passed away just a short while after that. I always wondered what happened to all his koi and his setup there.

Anyway, any other recommendations for koi sources in the area or region?

      Thank you

I think it is wise to start with a certain budget in mind. Put that number out there and then ask the question again. Do you want big fish right away? Then either you spend lots or you buy from a local koi club auction. Many clubs have sales to let members unload fish that no longer fit in their ponds. Either they outgrew the pond or they have a default that keeps them from being show quality.
If you don't mind raising tosai you can get quite a few decent ones and watch them grow. Russell Peters at PSKoi goes on buying trips to Japan a few times a year. You might just give him a budget and ask him to use his best judgement, or watch his threads while he travels and pick them while he is over there. His fish go thru one of the best quarantine procedures that any of us could ever ask for.
It might be very advantageous to get all of your koi from one source- less worries about KHV or any other health issues.
