Yard dirt or loose soil from a garden center. Do not get any soils with additives such as peat moss, mulch or vermiculite as it will dirty up your water.
I use API Pond Aquatic Planting Media. This is where I order it from.
https://webbsonline.com/Item/PondCar...ng-Media-83187
It is a blend of natural minerals, including zeolite, which provides a clean, easy-to-use planting media which does not float or cloud water. It traps and holds nutrients from aquatic fertilizer tablets too.
Special Kitty Natural Clay Cat Litter, Unscented, 25 lb from walmart
This is what I used on TOP of basic yard clay in a deeper bowl (like 1-2" deep layer). This stuff is pretty expensive but it doesn't cloud (whereas clay will cause a nightmare in your water). By putting a solid layer over the clay it holds most of the clouding in. My lotus are popping up like crazy. Keep in mind though this stuff has no nutritional value so you'll want some fertilizer pills.
Thanks all for the great info
Nancy, I bought this item from Webbs but it has little rocks and floating "sticks"..I have both water lilies in a small baby swimming pool, but it is leaching out into the
water. I am going to have to go buy some rock to go on top before I try to put it in my 300 gal tubs. I did put some flat rocks on top to hold the tuber. How did you
keep yours from not floating out into the water I didn't want to go back to kitty litter clay, but I don't want my water nasty..
I used this in 10 pots that I dropped into my pond with no issues and no rocks to hold it down; however, I think you missed one big step... I dumped the bags into a wheelbarrow and then washed them with water before I put them into my pots. There was definitely some haze and some mild material that came up as a result which I just poured out of the wheelbarrow. So I think you need to wash them.
That said, this stuff is just like kitty litter and has zero nutritional value. In the future I will not use it, instead I will use all clay/loamy and then just put a 1-2" layer of pea gravel up top to hold the sediment in. Pea gravel at a garden landscape store in bulk is literally pennies per pound. This API medium is many dollars per pound. Just doesn't seem to make sense if you have other materials available to you.
