      Gold fish question

I have a 1000 gallon pond and started it 7 years ago with 6 39cent goldfish from Walmart. It is my first and only pond.. I didn't know anything about ponds. The first year I ordered pond plants and they multiplied to the point that the entire top of the pond was covered, at the end of the summer I removed them all and had quite the surprise that there were lots of babies, long story short I now have about 60 fish in the pond ranging from 5 inches to about 9 inches. One of the 5 inchers, we call Flipper has some unusual habits unlike any of the others. He sleeps on his side in the winter at the bottom of the pond and in the summer he would swim with his head above the water, then graduated to leaping a bit and now he completely jumps out of the water and dives back in. Is this unusual? I have only lost 3 fish since I began this pond.

It is definitely unusual. Since it is only the one out of 60 goldfish, there is probably some physical defect that his behavior compensates for. He has overcome the limitation, whatever it is, so enjoy his antics and leave him alone.

I like your post. You have summed up in your 7 years of experience why goldfish are more suitable for a small pond. They give pleasure and thrive without all the work and emotional trauma of trying to keep koi in a pond smaller than is best for them. Kudos to you. ......However, 60 seems a bit much to me. I think around 30 would be a better number. But, you have kept them for all these years so you just keep doing what you do. Less work, less worry, more fun.

I have a black silkie chicken who has one eye and (as best I can guess) a partially broken neck. It walks around with it's head literally sideways all day looking straight up at the sky. Often it walks in circles.

It's my friendliest, nicest chicken and always the first one the kids who visit my farm pick up and cuddle.

Nature always finds a way. Enjoy your fish.
