      DIY - Prefilter

I needed a prefilter so I made one. If anyone needs ideas, this worked well(so far). I have a mag drive pump to my filter/water fall. I had a hard time to find a pvc pipe that also fit the basket with some clearance. I found a tetra pre-filter and modified it for my needs.

      Parts:
      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      1.5" clear hose
      pvc fitting
      gutter guard

      1. I cut a hole in the top of the pre-made tetra pre-filter with a 2.75 hole saw, then a little filing until the basket could fit into it easily to removed for cleaning.
      2. Grinded down the bottom tube. The inlet on the bottom/inside of the pre-filter was too high for my liking, so I dremled it lower.
      3. cut down a peice of the gutter guard to simi-permintly seal the inlet to the pump so no debre that the pump can not handle will get suck in the inlet of the pump.
      4. found a pvc fitting to fit the outlet of the pre-filter and connect it with clear tubing to my mag drive pump.

A skimmer basket does the same thing and is another source of the same type of bits.

True, but when the outer slots clog up, then the basket traps all the big items. I really wanted the outside to have no slits, but could not find any pvc in 5" inch to use. The basket is the key for me, it grabs all the big items(leaves and twigs and holds the nicely and i only need to clean the basket once a week.
