      Tosai Kois feeding related

      Hi All

I know this may be discussed in different threads but I would like to get some suggestions specific to my case.
I have around 6 Kois now. They are around 12cm long on an average.

      1. Because both me and my wife are not at our house from 10 AM to 8PM because of our work schedule, I feed them only 2 times a day. Morning 9:30 AM and night 10:00PM. I give them small pellets, a handful may be some 30 gms for these 6 Kois. Is this timing fine ? Do I need to buy an automatic feeder for the third time in a day ? Currently all of them look healthy and fine, I have seen them sometimes eating algae on the pond walls.

      2. Is fasting a day in a week good for Kois or any other fishes ? I heard so from my friends, that would make their stomach more healthier. Is it true ?

      3. What are the vegetables and fruits other than the ready made pellets that we can safely give to the Kois ?

      4. I have mollies (which I got a stest fishes for the pond) as well in the pond. I give them micro pellets designed for guppies and mollies. Sometimes Kois also eat it. Is there a problem with that ?

      5. Is there anything that I should take care while feeding my Kois. In general I am new to fish keeping hobby.

Just sharing a video of my Kois for your reference:

      Thanks in advance.

The koi will be fine with the other food but focus on feeding them a food designed for koi. The number of times you are feeding is okay. They will get by with that. In nature, they pretty much are grazing lightly throughout the day. The main thing is not to overfeed too much at a single time. It's much better to feed lightly a few times during the day.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

You should take it slowly for bio to established because you do need massive filtration to use an auto feeder
I would feed at 7am, 10am before work and 9am after work

      2. Is fasting a day in a week good for Kois or any other fishes ? I heard so from my friends, that would make their stomach more healthier. Is it true ?

Some of us fast our koi in winter for them to loose eggs
So for young koi I don’t think it is necessary

      3. What are the vegetables and fruits other than the ready made pellets that we can safely give to the Kois ?
I gave my koi lettuce salad any type of greens in the summer orange n watermelon also nice
      4. I have mollies (which I got a stest fishes for the pond) as well in the pond. I give them micro pellets designed for guppies and mollies. Sometimes Kois also eat it. Is there a problem with that ?
Koi would eat anything but special design for koi is ideal to maintain qualities
Tosai need high protein prefer over 40% and 10-12% fat in pellets to growth
Soon you will find the mollies need to rehome

      5. Is there anything that I should take care while feeding my Kois. In general I am new to fish keeping hobby.

Observe for red sores/ ulcers or abnormal behaviors
Get a chagoi and you can hand feed the herd

Thank you Marilyn and OCkoiFan for the details you have shared. It really helps me to plan for future.

Soon you will find the mollies need to rehome
Ya. True. Already they are around 50 or more. They were my test fishes. Shop keeper had asked me to take only 3-4 of mollies for test, but the greedy me, being my first experience with fishes, took 10 of them and ended up like this :D
I know I need to find another home for them. That means, a pond/tank, a filter, aeration, water changes etc etc. My god! But they are the ones who helped me to test this pond, so I should be grateful to them

Get a chagoi and you can hand feed the herd
Is Chagoi just the color variant. With my Koi dealer I think I have seen this color variant of Koi. Or Chagoi is something different ?

This is what I give to the Kois as suggested by my dealer.
It seems it is less in Fat, but this is what available online with small/mini pellet size. Hikari and others have large pellets and they say the Koi should be 20 cm long.

With the type of koi you currently have right now this type of food is just fine
Is it more like color enhancing food which ideal for warmer temperature range which where you are

You asked about fasting and while it may not be necessary for most, I did find it advantageous to do this when I was pushing tosai for growth and feeding heavily. By heavily I mean they were getting auto fed small amounts about every 20-25 minutes. That was during the peak of summer and I didn't feed that heavily for long. I did notice that feeding them this way they would develop slight bellies and the one day fast would bring it back into line.

There wouldn't be a need to do this unless you were really heavily pushing food. I suspect with the volume of water you have, a need to fast is unlikely but I do strongly suggest that small koi be fed smaller amount throughout the day.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn
