      Retrofit bottom drain

The time has come for me to start thinking about adding a retrofit bottom drain to my pond.

I’m thinking about rerouting my periha 16000 pump 3850 gph through something similar
      https://goo.gl/images/ig2Uz8

Currently it’s connected to a 1.5 inch corrugated tubing to my jebao 55watt I’ve clarifyer which I think Ian slowing down the flow rate of the pump a lot. Should I go with 2 inch pvc piping then straight to my filtration or just increase the pipe from 1.5 inch to 2 inch pvc through the uv then to the filter?

      Thanks

I don’t see any benefit with more things in the pond
The Periha should does a fine job sucking and screening like a bottom drain
Unless you can add a retrofit BD and somehow place the pump as an external mode

Maybe make like an n across the wall with the pvc?

I like the pic/pond you provided
You should stick with tamasaba/goldfish and still have a tranquility look there
The koi hobby turned your pond ugly

I took the pond plants out I can always add them back in but only on the edges of the pond with the roots in the water so the koi won’t disturb them.

      Here’s another old photo.

I was at Seaside Yesterday , and Tom has a bunch of used retro bottom drains that were removed from one of Our good Friends Here , that recently moved to His new Estate the size of a small Country .
Tom is so busy , but maybe He can list them Here , or just You contact Him .

The lip edge gap of a conventional or retro bottom drain is what makes them work better at picking up solids off of the bottom of the pond .

      .
An open strainer or perforated pipe or even like on a sub pump , takes water from above and sides and all over , and doesn’t sweep the bottom as well .

      .
If you were to want to do a perforated pipe or DIY strainer , make the holes or slits on the bottom only .
And there is allways a DIY retro bottom drain

Okay does anyone know how to attach a matala 9 inch membrane into a 2 inch retrofit bottom drain?

Has anyone Jerry rigged this up before?

2" retro bottom drain covers a lot of ground and too many variables. I've edited my post as you added a pic, thanks.

As I recall, those allow for adding some form of ballast, right? I would be wary of opening that up as it will be a breeding ground for nasty bacteria and would try and do something that sits on top of it but maintains the sealed nature of the bottom drain.
Let me dig around AES and see what I can find.

Btw, is the bottom of your diffuser threaded?

I would get something like this:

I showed a FPT but use MPT if that is appropriate.
Center the fitting over the center of the drain, secure the area ahead of the barb to the bottom drain with either PL or Marine Adhesive. Don't cover the barb section. Make sure you have it absolutely upright. I'd thread the diffuser into it and put spacers to hold it in place until the adhesive set.

Using tubing gives you some flexibility on making the air line a bit less conspicuous than it would be if it was hard plumbed. For qt's and such, I usually just either wound the tubing around the bottom drain line or zip tied to it.

I haven't ordered the 9 inch matala air membrane yet but from what I recall from my matala 9 inch with base(currently in my moving bed), it did have threading where ONE CAN twist it to attach to the weighted base.

Maybe I can purchase the elbow with the thread and somehow attach that to the retrofit 2" with strong metal wires (????) and split my hakko 40 to feed both.

I dont plan to open or cut up the 2 inch retrofit..

Metal rusts and wire ends are dangerous but yes, you can attach it that way.

you can screw that 3/4" Threaded elbow to Retrofit drain with SS screws and thread in your matala disc ( comes with male thread end). a little silicon II around the screws if you worry about air leak, but for me, there is no need, air needs to get out anyway.

I think that sounds like a plan. A stainless bracket and screws it is
