New concrete pond installation 5000 gallons with RDF and bead filter.

I bought a house a couple of years ago which came with a five thousand gallon aquascape pond. I got addicted to Koi and now that I know more (thanks to this website and others) I am looking into building a fifteen thousand gallon Koi dedicated pond like this. However, I live in Denver Colorado. Do you construct ponds in other towns like Denver?

I see mechanical filtration with the rdf what is your biological filter set going to be?

There is a aqua ultima bead filter buried in the ground right next to the rdf.

Despite the rain we could have had this pond dug and poured in 3-4 days.
Now we maintain moisture in and around the pond, we will wait 1-2 weeks for the concrete to cure then treat with muriatic acid and seal with epoxy.

The corner walls are 11” thick and the middle sections 9” thick.
The floor is 12” thick then tapers to the drain 1/4 per foot.

We are using 5000 psi shotcrete with fiberglass and xypex admix.

Hi A1Koi, can you share your reason for these mixtures? I understand Xypex Admix(waterproofing) and probably the 5000 psi shotcrete(strength), but is the fiberglass necessary? Like additional bonding and crack resistant? Is this standard for concrete pond? or you're going above and beyond?

Then also, your process to treat with muriatic acid, which I believe is to acid wash the surface in preparation for the epoxy. Is the epoxy basically for a smooth surface? or are there other reasons?

We add Fiberglass to minimize concrete related shrinking -cracking specifically for shotcrete.
We don’t use fiberglass for monolithic concrete pours.
Xypex is a waterproofing additive used for all of our koi pond installs.
Epoxy is for a very smooth finished surface.
