      Hydrogen Sulfide Question

Today i began to restart my pond from the recent cooler months, i noticed a vague smell of rotten eggs and the only thing it could be is hydrogen sulfide. There are no fish in the pond, they are all in my garage for the next two months while the temp gets warmer. In order to get rid of it completely, should i drain all the water and remove the thin layer of decomposed organic matter probably laying on the bottom(Pond is bare bottom)?

Yes, you need to get that decaying matter out of the pond to prevent the formation of hydrogen sulfide. When you restarted the pond the decaying matter moved releasing the gas.

And after cleaning all the decaying debris a low dose (2 ppm or less) might help removing
      any that might remain.

A low dose of potassium permanganate perhaps?

If no fish are being added but you are circulating the pond for the next two months. Do not worry about the Hydrogen Sulfide. It will be long gone over the next few days provided you get all the organic material removed from the pond that caused it to develop.

Always keep your pond clean though: Hydrogen Sulfide is dangerous in parts per billion (ppb) long term not ppm. Generally speaking it is 1000 times more dangerous than NH3/4 or NO2

This is a good reminder thread for those who open up their pond in the spring, and have decaying matter on the bottom. Don't disturb the leaves with fish in the pond; you can vacuum them out, if you're careful not to disturb, and you do the low dose PP as a safety measure.
