This is Fatty. I was given her after spawning season was over. She is my favorite and so friendly.
I hope she is not breedable as I only have eligible GF, and I don't want koi-mets.
She is 17.5 inches and weighs 3 pounds. The story I got was She was living in an outside pond in zone 5 and they sold the house and left her. No one knows her age.
How old would she be if she did zone 5 winters rather than eat all year round?
Is she likely to breed or do they get too old?
I have more pics if you need to see more.

      thanks

Thank you for taking her in. I will never understand how people can leave their pets behind when they move, as if they were furniture or something.

Prime mating age is between 3-6 years old, but koi have also been able to lay eggs until they are up to 15 years old or so.

Oh she's adorable! So sweet of you to take her and I Love the name you gave her too!

That's a very good question though. I know that females are usually sexually mature at 3 years (about 12-18 inches in length) and males become sexually mature at 2 years of age. Not often, but there have been times when immature males have produced sperm that have resulted in very poor quality or deformed fry. So on the other end of the spectrum I wonder if the quality of a very old female's eggs would likewise be compromised if she were to spawn?

I don't know how fast they grow here but how old do you think she is? Is it possible she's 3? I figured she was old.

So cute! What are you give her as a 'reward'? I don't think she's old. Not by the general size guideline certainly. Charming!

*She's also acting lively and robust. I wouldn't be worried about Koi "menopause" just yet if I were you.

I have always kept goldfish with my koi and after 25 years have less than 10 suspected of being goldfish/koi (koimets) cross.

I also thing goldfish are suspect for eating all koi fry if there is not too much cover for hiding.

Female's will spawn into there mid to later teens the problem at that later stage is that the egg walls are thicker and make it harder for the fry to make it out from the egg there fore causing a low hatch rate.

My kujaku female spawned at 11 years. It did not produce good results, but there are probably other reasons for that besides age.

My kin ki matsuba and ki utsuri female spawned at 15 years.
There was a lot of deformation of the fry.
I do not know what was the reason for these deformities, or just age or something else...

No, she's not a Bekko. She is Doitsu. Best guess would be something along the lines of Kikokuryu. I had a koi similar to this years ago. She's quite pretty.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

Now that's a mouthful. I'll look kikokuryu up.

I wondered after a winter turpor if she'd remember that hoop trip. So last week I tossed the hoop in and she gave it a looksee and then started swimming thru it again. I didn't have to retrain her. Her memory on how to get snacks is not effected by turpor.
      I thought that was interesting.
