Drs Foster and Smith being shut down

The other year Petco bought the company and got rid of the pharmacy. Last June they fired 55 office positions saying they were looking towards the future. Less than a year later and they announce everything but LiveAquaria is shutting down.

I freaked when i read your post - then did a little research and discovered it happened 3 years ago. That explains why their services have deteriorated!

Article mentions a physical facility closing. Looks like some jobs will shift to CA Petco operation. Might become a virtual storefront like many other internet pet supply stores. Just software that relay orders to others. The facility closing explains the very deep clearance discounts they have been giving on many items lately.

I think the unfortunate aspect is many people used F&S brands or Blackwater on feeding. The price was good on F&S while the Blackwater food was a stable price that beat out everyone due to the volume they purchased, and of course sales made it better. A 40lb bag of Gold N was 140 and change and could drop down to 115 with a good sale. Other places buying less volume are selling at $180-$290 with is a pretty heafty jump. Hopefully the brands or buying power stays with Petco and the F&S site is run like normal with Petco being behind it. If not then hopefully someone else can get good volume pricing and offer stuff out.

Agree. They had great pricing on saltwater supplies as well. The link to F&S dropped off LiveAquaria.

The problem with Chewy is their selection for Koi food sucks.

I get all of my pet supplies from Chewy except for the medications. My vet sends the prescriptions to them. I guess I will have
to ask her to send it to Chewy instead. Oh...right no koi food from Chewy. Only cats/dogs/goldfish. Great company to deal with.

Dr F&S doesn't appear to be shutting down. It appears the parent company is reorganizing the operation to be more efficient to compete with other internet stores. If you like the prices and quality of service no reason to switch.

The company is being closed per Petco. All employees fired or moved to other places, warehouse closed, retail store closed.

"Petco today announced that we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close the Drs. Foster and Smith (DFS) business based in Rhinelander, Wis., on February 12, 2019. Taking into account the needs of modern pet parents, shifting consumer preferences and the ongoing evolution of the Petco brand, we believe this will enable us to streamline operations and better focus on our core business and customer. This change affects 289 employees, with their last days of employment varying over the next 60 to 120 days – all have been notified and will be provided severance and transition support. This decision has not been an easy one, nor has it been made lightly, and we appreciate that it has a very real effect on both individuals and the broader community in Rhinelander. In an effort to help, we’re committed to working with local officials to provide ample outplacement programming for those impacted starting in February. We greatly appreciate all of our partners for their dedicated service and contributions to Drs. Foster and Smith and to Petco."

The Rhinelander location is being shut down. Dr. F&S internet store appears to still be in operation and ran from Petco CA offices. Will it be the same?... time will tell.
Website appears to be still in operation and taking orders. Petco also has warehouse and distribution operations and didn't need the Rhinelander location. Like many of this type of buyout they don't want the company and employees they are purchasing its marketshare. Is it a good move or the start of another Sears/KMart? Maybe just a software order taking company now with no inventory?

I can't find any info they are getting rid of the internet business.

Unfortunately, this is how big business works. Companies buy out another one, say their going to keep everything the same, no interruption in service, etc., the wham! They fire everyone and bring in their own people. Happens all the time.

Dr F&S did the exact same thing years past to increase its marketshare. Sad event for the long term employees that made a commitment to the company having to look for a new career.

Hopefully they keep up their sale promotions like before. I have a $30 merchandise coupon and it appears to still be good in the online store. Just ordered some aquarium supplies.
