Short answer is every fish is an individual and often the signs are reflective of how long the fish can survive the disease.
That can become complicated based on strains of KHV conditions etc. Good luck and looking foreward and more understand of the issue.

Sure Stonger fish will survive a bit longer. But once a khv infection takes hold it wipes out most the koi
.recently though it's not hitting 100 percent of the koi and 80 percent many die and leave 20 percent as carriers.

      Several Comments, responses and clarifications:

I asked Cindy (and Sandy by extension) to come back and take a more active role here again. She has been with this forum since the beginning, as have I. In a chat recently she said she (paraprashing) just got tired of the infighting & bullying and walked away. So I said "You're such an integral part of this forum. Why not work with 'the powers that be' and try to keep folks like that from taking over and chasing others off with insensitive talk and no allowances for others' opinions?" And here she is! Too bad she says she's not staying Likewise, Sandy. Both valuable Koiphen members.

montwila (Monte), I'm glad you cleared that up. I was confused by the meaning of your first post as well. I see now it was simply a misunderstanding. Thank you.

I think we should have a KHV Quarantine Protocol Sticky posted for anyone who wants to follow it, with a few links with general KHV info. We have the standard Quarantine info but I didn't see anything about KHV in the sticky unless I missed it.

Koigarden, I apologize for our behavior. Please don't leave just yet. There are many good people here; unfortunately no one is perfect and sometimes things get out of hand. We're trying to correct that. PM sent.

It is in the in depth research papers found on the internet. They mention different strains but is usually just in one sentence and not discussed. I have yet to find in depth on the different strains per say. I know that for many it is of no value to read in depth articles about KHV. And I well admit that a lot of it goes way over my head. However if everyone that is interested in KHV. They should read the articles and you would pick up lot of information about KHV. One example is it was posted that infected koi go to the bottom of pond. This is a possibility based on conditions of the koi. But the majority of infected koi stay at the surface swimming irradically, darting at times and hanging were the higher sources of oxygen can be found.

My Koi had none of those indicators other than some died. We only had a 20% mortality rate as well.

If your Koi are otherwise healthy, no parasites or bacterial issues, this is true.

Yep! As I mentioned to Monte. It's more complicated.

There are three types of KHV or Cyprinid Herpesvirus. They are CyHV1, CyHV2 and CyHV3. Only two kill but one of the two that kills can be cured and the other there is no hope for. The third one many people already have and we know it as carp pox.

Did you recently get these Koi from Choguro or Hoshikin or have you had them for a while?

Then you should ask for help, talk about your Koi and KHV, and refrain from making remarks and passing judgement about people you don't know.

As you well know, when valuable Koi are sick and dying it becomes a volatile topic and tempers flare, and old issues are brought to the forefront. If you're not a part of it kindly don't add fuel to the fire. Aside from the unfortunate differences coming into play here we will still do our best to help everyone who asks for it. JMHO

No one wants you to leave. We're discussing an issue like adults. You got annoyed with people, criticizing and name calling for taking up time when you expected to talk about KHV; yet you did the same thing with disrespect. I asked you to stop that and said we'd be glad to help.

I believe that Russell has already answered several of your questions and asked some of you in return.

      Why would you leave?
