8k gallon pond build - Memphis TN

I’m really new to the hobby and currently just have a bunch of pond grade koi in a temporary pond (pool). My wife and I decided to add a koi pond we could enjoy to the backyard. We wanted something that would last and something that would be the proper setup for enjoying koi. A search for local contractors yielded no results, and we ended up deciding on PSKoi after hearing positive things about Russ’ ability to construct ponds. The inside dimensions of the pond are going to be approximately 12 x 18 x 5. It will have 2 bottom drains going to the RDF (Red Label 30/35) and then a 6’ wide stainless shower with Bakki media. I would like to thank all those who have posted and started discussions that helped educate me on what the best decision would be for my setup here. I will try to share photos as the build progresses, since I know we all love photos.

They are working to help load larger pics. I also have to downsize pics or load 1 at a time. Taking a video and loading YouTube also works good. Congrats on the new pond

So this started the hunt - our family always loved koi. I used to keep saltwater tanks, and know some about water chemistry, but I used my kids love of koi to persuade my wife we needed a koi pond. This is a local botanic garden that we frequent in order to feed the koi.

A local guy that kept koi for 20 years told me he had several large koi in a 2000 gallon pond. Without all the details, we agreed to take the koi and I thought I had a large enough setup to handle the load until we found a builder. At this point, I didn't know koiphen even existed. My wife loved the temporary setup

So, after finding Koiphen, the first thing I did was drive Ademink crazy getting help on how to keep all these fish alive. The end result was that we drained our 32,000 gallon inground swimming pool to hold the fish for the winter. This is because we realized quickly the right koi pond was not going to be something that came quickly. We really struggled to find anyone local that would even come close to building what the fish need. Our pond site is on a slope, which didn't make things any easier. Here's the pond site. I'll try to figure out how to load a short mov clip of the fish in the pool.

Here's a picture of the excavation. We had a ton of rain and the excavators did the work the same day Russ arrived. Unfortunately, we discovered later that they failed to dig the pond to the proper depth, so my pond will now be 24 inches above ground (and higher as it slopes). Oh well, there was nothing I could do and at this point, it seems 24 inches won't be too bad. That PVC line is to my sprinkler system and it will be backfilled. In reality, that sprinkler head and area won't be used. If I keep this up, I'll finally get out of having to mow the lawn because there will be no more grass.

It rained unexpectedly and so we covered the end of the hole near the house, just to prevent erosion near the house. It did put things behind a bit, but Mother Nature had to do her thing. Name: IMG_3120.jpg

I was super impressed with the quality of the forms and the meticulous details Russ put into making sure the pond is going to be structurally sound.

Since I"m new to the hobby I'd never seen bottom drains in person. These things are huge and heavy. They will gravity flow to the RDF. As you can see, the unexpected rain made it pretty muddy, but it was dry enough to get everything in place.

Everything is looking good and the pond is starting to take shape. The next thing will be rebar and then the inner forms.

Hey man..we have had a great time and you have made some valiant efforts to save the fish! Can't wait to see it finished. Russ will do a fantastic job so you can breathe easy.

For now, the pond is covered until the holiday passes. There was alot of prep work done that isn't visible to keep water flowing away from the hole. We hope the rain doesn't come, but you never know around here....

This is in the backyard? Great build so far. 2 feet won’t be that bad above ground since my raised pond is only 2 feet deep.

Looks good. I actually think 24 inches above ground makes for a good seating area
