We have our RDF in a sunken filter pit with a cover made out of plywood and pressure treated lumber. This is the first year that we have kept the RDF running throughout the winter with only the pond return circuit working after shutting down the waterfall/zakki shower circuit. So far so good. We had some ice develop late last week from the polar vortex but the two air domes in our bottom drains kept plenty of water moving and thus not icing over and no issues in the pit. I think keeping the water moving in some form helps.

I might be able to but it's a odd shaped thing:

      Plus another 20 bucks.
There's so few times it's likely to be an issue for me I might be able to just wrap it in some insulation
like you would a hose bib... I think I'll try that and see how it does. But I'd worry more about it if
you had long periods of time with freezing temps.

You know after seeing your photo of the solenoid our auto-leveler recently stopped working and we aren't sure if our water line is still frozen or if our solenoid valve stopped working. Might have to check it this weekend.

I have a Levolor too but mine is in an enclosed shed away from the RDF so never
had a problem with that, but the solenoid I used for the RDF is almost identical to the Levolor one.
I think it would have been okay except when I lost power it was sitting for about 8 hours in
20* air temps without operating and that may have been enough to allow it to freeze.

So do you use your solenoid to only open when your jet pump triggers?

Actually vice versa... the pump always is pressurized and "on call" so as soon as power is applied to the
solenoid and it opens it "calls" for water flow and the jet pump starts flowing water. But the solenoid
activates on a timer that triggers it every 30 minutes. I think when it was idol for several hours during
the power outage it froze. Just a guess though.

Would I higher end valve maybe not stick from the cold..I believe they are magnetic but thought some were little better and not stick. Heat lamp is pretty easy though

Glad to hear you figured out the issue and it was an easy fix!

We had temps below zero and the Red Label is still running! I was super nervous since it hasn't been given a trial run in the winter by anyone I know but so far, still good!
