Showa Spawn from the mother city Cape Town South Africa

      Hi guys.

I need some help identifying the sex of this koi. They about 3 to 4 years and 45 to 50cm. I would like to breed them. Just need help identifying the sex as I dont realy want to sedate and press their belly's that's beyond my experience.

I'll post pics with the last 2 being my main question Mark's.

Post 7 & 8, female. On post 6 leading ray on the pectoral fin it's short but very thick, if you can feel the koi cheeks for any roughness like sand paper thats a indicator of male but not 100%, get a partner with the camera to snap a picture of the buisness end (close up) while you flip it up side down and come back with the picture. That will get you a clearer response

      Hi!

I don't usually jump in (daily lurker) but I thought that since nobody pointed it out yet, it was needed to, just in case.
From the last pic I can see some redness on the fins and that may be carp pox, I am no expert on that and breeding but it may not be a good idea to breed a koi that is not at 100% condition since there may be stress specially for the females (I am not sure if breeding is fine with a koi having carp pox or infection).
Hopefully anybody with more experience can give a better response.

      Cheers!

Since my koi are hard to catch in a large pond, I am less familiar with the techniques of feeling for rough gill plates or examining the vents. My main way of telling which ones are female is by looking for a sharp, sudden change in body thickness near the vent area. All koi get thinner as you go back from the middle of the body toward the tail, but with males the slope is gradual and steady. The females tend to stay really thick to the vent and then suddenly get skinny from there back. It seems like your showas each have this female characteristic. The utsuri seems to have that some, but it is less pronounced. A secondary inticater that I use is observing courtship type behavior among koi who are getting ready for spawning. I look for who is following who. These are indicators, but neither is a sure fire way of telling.
