KurtG - continuous update thread 2014-2020

Editing this into a running update thread, rather than new posts each year-
      2021 selections
      Murata Kohaku

      INC showa

      Matsue maruten sanke

tosai selections from PSKoi for 2020:
      Teradomari ginrin tancho

      10/2020

      Sekiguchi showa

      Taniguchi tancho sanke

      10/2020 update

      Tosai picks from 2019
      Omosako Shiro
      pskoi sale photo

      Oct 10 photo 15"

      10/2020

      Murata Kohaku
      PSKoi photos

Oct update, first one is 18" second is 17"

      10/2020 updates

      Taniguchi Showa

      Oct 2019 17.5"

      10/2020 update

      Minuma showa - tiny

      Oct 2019 14.5"

      10/2020 update

First up Tamaura Sanke (via PSKoi tosai spring
2017), one of my favorite fish in the pond. Beni looks a little funky mid-dorsal. Very shy fish until this year so was a slow grower.
      bottom left (6")

      now (15-16")

      2019 20" slow grower

second up, Omosako Shiro Utsuri (my son's pick for the pirate eye patch as tosai middle below) via PSKoi tosai spring 2017, has jet ink sumi ( a bit too much for me, but I like it)

      last fall

      now

      10/2020 update

Next up a pair of Dainichi gin rin kohaku (via Kodama) they have grown slow but the beni on Dainichi has held well on all for 4 koi in my pond

      Tosai "B"

      now

      2019 26"

10/2020 update when seining to rehome a few

Next - free tosai from PSKoi 2017- Chogoro platinum (another son's koi). I almost killed this koi bowling today. It shot to the moon when it saw the net and landed above the pond on top of the elevated net (I was working underneath so no clue how that happened). Will have to watch it, but that is why the fins are red. This is by far the shyest fish in the pond, I've never seen it eating

      now

2019 -not bowled seine net escape artist
10/2020 probably next on rehome list (small), but son attached to it

Yamabuki (via Kodama study tosai 2017) This thing growing like heck. It was 7" as tosai

      now 23":

2019 not bowled- still the pig too large to bowl
      10/2020 update (over 30")

Tancho Showa from Kobayashi via PSKoi tosai 2016:
      two tosai pics weeks apart???

      2017 photos

      2018 photo

2019 pretty still, but looks like on the way out now

      10/2020 update

Lastly one of my favorites escaped the sein multiple times and I didn't realize it until looking at the phone :
      Kindai showa from Kobayashi

      10/2020 Kobayashi showa update

2019 not bowled too large but same quality sumi still not up, should rehome this one
this is the first koi in the pond- bought online from unknown dealer as Dainichi showa $50 tosai in 2014; now doesn't fir in the 30" bowl (bottom is narrower).Another that lost a scale being bowled
      tosai 2014 (left koi)

      now 2018

2019 - it is over 32" no way to bowl her
I decided not to bowl the right koi above, it too wouldn't fit in the bowl and looks unchanged except size (no sumi up)
2019 - this second show not pictured recently passed with tumor near gill plate; thought it was gaining girth.
      10/2020 update 34"

rehomed section: Now residing in the farm pond (150'x150'x10')
      Dainichi ginrin kohaku
      tosai 8/2017

      now

2019- this is my football koi, form not great 21"

      Taniguchi sanke

Kobayashi Shiro Utsuri (via PSKoi tosai 2016) My kobayashi koi are growing relatively slow. Not sure about this one??? It stresses bad in the bowl.
      top tosai in photo:

      now

2019 was going to rehome, but kept another season. Should have rehomed.

INC sanke via PSKoi (tosai 2017) grew well but had infection/now deformity with the nostril. Beni is broken. This seems like one of two obvious fails.
      second tosai from bottom

2019 bled during bowling; beni actually consolidated was going to rehome, but put back in pond due to bleeding and beni ~27 in

Tamaura Showa via PSKoi (tosai 2017) this one seems like another fail beni is breaking and sumi shows no signs of rising
      tosai (large koi pointing left)

      now:

I also really like your first sanke. Also the tancho showa is very cool fish. What is your average growth from tosai to nasai?
I just recently added a couple tancho’s really like them! My platinum is also very shy, wont come near me when hand feeding.

I'm just spit balling that it is ~9" first summer season, 6" second summer season...but some really exceed and some don't meet that. It is hard to feed for one extreme or the other. I think the 'fails' grew too fast for their beni.

That’s good growth! I went with mostly jumbo tosai this time, when I got them they were mostly all 12” plus. I have a few that are over 18” now, growing season is about done in my neck of the woods. I’m really interested to see how they fair next year. I have a few that we’re not jumbo so will be interesting to see in the end if there’s any real difference. What was the average size on most of your tosai when you got them? I see a few were 6-7”.

I have very soft water only because our well goes through a softener before it gets to the back yard and then I also have a tannin issue that further softens the water. I am hoping to remove that tree this fall. Most of the time the water is a bit tea colored which annoys me.

updated the rest today which were not too large for me to bowl. If they were at or over 28-30" I cant bowl them.

I have a few over 30" the Yamabuki is 30" and my first koi/showa is over 32" (measured in spring but not pulled), the 2nd kobayashi showa is a hefty 28"+ (guess) and the older omosako shiro is about 29" (could be longer) The no sumi Tamaura showa is 28+" (guess).
