Carlos being in the South Florida area, well water brings issues that folks here would need more information concerning your water parameters in order to help you, please consider posting your water
Parameters and let's go from here

Just looks like hard, dark red Beni, which never lasts.

Every dog has its day. And a koi’s beauty best is the test. And this koi’s best days were when it was younger. Too much intensity in beni early on and later failing is “textbook” (if there is such a thing).

In a recent discussion of “shimis” this term was used more broadly, but the small black dots on the beni of this kohaku is also textbook.

Thanks for the reply, I wanted to follow up on the thread. It’s been almost a month since I posted the pictures and I decided to take the fish out today and take a closer look. It seems that maybe it’s not just a matter of discoloration. The area looks irritated and the top layer of the skin seems loose in some areas. I’ll include sine pictures that look like lesions caused by what might be some other underlying issue( bacterial or viral). The fish is in good condition otherwise, very active and eating well, water quality is also fine
