      Spawning

At what size/age can fancies successfully spawn at?

I dropped a diy spawning mop in the pond yesterday ment for my koi. I’ve never had a spawn so I’ve just been observing.
I know it is close to spawning season here. Couple that with the end of a heatwave, temps dropped from near 100f(heat index hit 104) down to low 70’s. It’s been stormy with lots of rain. Pond temp went from 74 to 70 this morning.
At close to 6am I went out and saw the herd gathered by the spawning material. Turns out it’s not the koi getting frisky, but my gold and white ryukin and black moor.
Now the female ryukin is 3yrs old, but the male is only a year old tops. I got him September of last year at about 1 1/2”. He is now around 5” I think. I haven’t measured him, so just guessing.
Is he old enough to fertilize any eggs?
I doubt any eggs will survive the herd, but still curious.

I snipped a small section of material off and tried my best to keep the eggs under water as I scooped the cut piece into a bucket. I then transferred that to a running tank inside. I put it in a breeding basket over a bubbler and added a little salt to fight fungus.
I’m not sure I did any of this right. If they are fertilize hopefully I get at least a couple that make it. I’ve raised cichlids but not goldies, so this is new to me. I’ve never moved eggs before.

I bred a bunch of panda moors one year, most fun and the babies were so cute. Good luck with these.

      Thank you.
I do have a question since you’ve bred fancies. Is it common to have single fined fry? Right now it’s looking like at least 3/4 have single fins. Only the very smallest have fantails.
Single fins. They are easily twice the size of the fantailed.

There will be throw-backs to the single tail, though I've had very few. I'm wondering if one of your koi didn't do the wild monkey dance also? Usually one can see the fantail right away. Now I breed wakins/watonia for fun and will get a straight tail every so often. They grow faster due to getting to the food faster, is my thought.

I’m beginning to wonder that myself. The koi hung around the whole time, but I figured they were just there eating eggs. It is possible though. Guess I’ll just have to see if any have barbells to give me a clue. There just seems to be such a big difference between the single and fanned fry. It does make sense that the single tailed ones would grow faster because they move around quicker, but I’d expect the same colors to be in both tail varieties. But they are different. I think if one of the koi spawned my yamabuki maybe to blame. Most all of the single tails are yellow, pale yellow, or dark starting to turn yellow. All the fans look like the one in the above picture. No other color variety.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you had a koi cross with a goldfish, the fry won't get barbells. Assuming that's what you were thinking... whereas if a koi female & male mated, there is a difference in egg size. With my 64 yo eyes in glasses, I can see koi eggs from a standing position. Goldfish eggs I have to bring the media up to my face and really look for them.

You bred a Moor with a( looks like a Ryukin ?} your going to have more throw backs as if they was both moors or Ryukins. Also your moor or ryukin might have something else in their back ground. Koi and gold fish crosses have one pair of barbells but are small.

Looking at the pictures again . You have koi fry. The two in that picture are both koi. Goldfish are dark at that size even if they are going to be white .
also a gold fish will not have that dark mark right before the tail like that dark one has .

Thank you both for your input. After posting I wasn’t sure if mixes would have barbells or not. So thank you @thumper dunker for clearing that up.
I have both male and female koi so it’s a toss up on if these will be crosses or not. I wish I would have finished my Goldie pond so I wouldn’t be left guessing for now.

I just took their two week old pictures today.
In this one you can see both the suspected koi/cross fry and the fantail fry. Name: 0372E6C4-3EBA-43EB-8C27-E78FE4CA7898.jpeg
