      Priming pot.

Looking to pick the brains of the best and brighest here, and we do have many on this forum.

We are about to pull the trigger on a RDF and I'm wondering about a large priming pot I can put in front of a 1/3 Artesian. Any ideas? The RDF will be pump fed and I'm hoping I can get away with not using a Zakki. Don't get me wrong I LOVE my Zakki I just don't have the $$$$ or space in the pump house for another one.

Any ideas would be very welcome.

Doesn't the 1/3 Artesian already have a pot on it?

It does indeed Billy. I'm looking for something larger that might insure a good prime as I'll be pulling up from the water surface around 14 inches or so. Also a larger leaf basket might be nice.

Does this make any sense, or am I overthinking this?

I see no need for a new pot. Maybe put a swing check valve before the Artesian.

Looks more like you are looking for large capacity large debris pre filter before the pump.

Isn’t forgoing an actual prefilter not the best idea?

If you have large leafs and debris than perhaps a collection box is what you are wanting. 2 priming pots will reduce flow also.

I overkill everything and this is my leaf basket from koi acres.

could you install this gravity fed? Would be easier to clean than a sealed leaf basket.

Yes but seems to fine removal if using a rdf

I don't know why you want to eliminate the zakki but I know a guy looking for one. This guy.

Call me ignorant, but isn’t putting a relative small debris trap in front of an RDF counterintuitive? The whole selling point of an RDF is minimal maintenance.

I can somewhat understand a sieve if you have a large leaf load, but for anything else, you are really not utilizing it to its fullest capacity.

I think the problem is that it is a pump fed RDF so he needs to protect the pump more so than removal of debris.

An RDF is a prefilter. Aside from most of them don’t handle leaves really well, it seems like a lot of work to avoid digging a pit and running them gravity fed.

This is why I don't like the idea of pump feeding an RDF . You definitely need something before the pump to protect it , and that something will need constant cleaning . Yes, seems counterproductive to the purpose of having an RDF. The only way that works better , is to draw the water from a place with less solids , like a mid water pick up . Still , then not using an RDF to it's best potential.
For direct suction , My fave is a Zacci , pump , S&G filter , will give RDF quality water.

I have two friends that use Zac’s ‘Zacodraco’ pump fed RDF/shower combo. It’s great because it uses a Zakki Sieve ahead of the pump, which only requires minimal maintenance every few days. With the new valve arrangement, it’s a simple process of turning 3 valves to flush and then reversing the order.

One of my friends has had one issue when the water source that feeds the RDF spray bar was accidentally turned off. The screen clogged and the pump pushed all of the pond water out through the drain on the RDF. Drained the pond and he unfortunately lost several fish.

With a gravity fed system, worst could happen is a pump going dry, and the newer controllable pumps like the Periaha have a low water cut-off built in.

It really comes down to what the leaf load is.

What's this about a new Zacci valve arrangement ? They have allways flushed with three valve turns .

That strainer looks like a beast, but at that price point I'd think there are a bazillion other options. I'm not being critical of your purchase, but more that this seems like it's really expensive for what it does and there have to be industrial versions for half this.
