Steve u have the skills to go direct drive and what i would do. Tried to bog down my profidrum motor by grabbing the drum. It has alot of torque. Chain drive just seems like more a pain on tension etc...

Zoran (Zoki51) has it dialed in though... hasn't had an issue with his, so I know it can be done.

Gear ratio of the new setup is 6.1 : 1 and the motor RPM is 10. This puts the drum speed at 1.6 RPM.

Interesting... there's a video hosted on FB in a private group (KKONA) so I can't share here but watching that it looks like his does
about 3/4 rotation in about 15 seconds.

But it looks like it would work for me.

Oriental motor has that series in many RPMs. No idea if 1.6 RPM is good or bad. Personally I would think a little slower is a safer alternative VS too fast.

I was kind of leaning to the opposite since I think it's pretty easy to get a controller to slow the speed but you can't make it
faster if it was too slow.

      Thanks again for the link!
Can't you just move the valve outside of the BE and replace the internal section with pipe? That way there is no electrical inside the case.

Now that you say it, I don't know why I couldn't!

I was kind of wondering that the other day but wasn't sure how the drum was built inside. I almost said something but I didn't.

If you want a variable speed motor make sure you buy one that is capable. Not all single phase motors run well when used with speed controls.

Most inexpensive speed controllers only cut the effective voltage, which means if you slow it down 50%, you get 50% less torque as well. Expensive setups can set an rpm set point and keep it there.

I’m driving to Portland currently, but when I get a free minute, I’ll count the teeth and calculate the actual gear ratio. This will tell you the target motor speed you need to turn the drum at the desired speed.

Traffic in Portland can be a nightmare.
I count 92 teeth on the big one, 15 on the little one. Not sure what that makes the ratio or speed.
The factory speed of the drum where I have it set is about 1 minute for a full rotation. I think it could be a little
faster and still be pretty efficient, but if it goes a little too fast, does it really hurt anything? Maybe I have to set
the time to clean every 45 minutes as opposed to every hour... it doesn't seem like it would make much difference.
I'm probably not seeing the big picture.

I already increased the photo size and counted the teeth. Same count as yours. This is how the ratio and final speed calculation using a 10 rpm motor was determined in post 44.

Oriental Motor makes that motor gearbox combo in several RPM outputs if the final speed is to be changed. They will probably suggest a different motor type if variable speed is desired.

      Thanks again for doing that!
And the 1.6 rpm compared to the current approx. 1 rpm doesn't seem like it would warrant spending more to
try and reduce it. Watching the video it seems like it should be fine.
That Oriental Motor is pretty pricey comparatively. Hopefully it lasts a LONG time.

Not an expert and are currently searching myself. Personally 1.6 RPM seems like a workable drum speed.

FWIW- I looked at the RDF's that had data available, and the KC version used between 15 and 20 NM motors with a "worm gear box" (did not see gear ratio), while the red label is using 60NM (looks like direct drive?). Seems like with the 6:1 gear ratio, something like 10 NM might be a good target
      .
