Anything decent about this midorigoi?
Anything decent about this midorigoi?
Hi, there,
In my experience with midori and they nearly all tend to get muddy. This little guy is showing signs of it. That said. Grow it on and when you post his pic again in six months or so we'll all learn something.

Will do!
Here is a 4 month update, he has grown quite a bit.
Oddly, it seems to look a little better.
See the stippling or smudging around the dorsal scales? That's where midori tend to go muddy first and also on the head. The muddiness seems less pronounced now, the color seems brighter and the head isn't smudging up. I think you just bought another six months of watching this guy. Show us again in April. As they say in the news, "watch this space."

That’s some good news! I’m wondering if I should bring him in for the winter and continue to grow him or leave him outside in the cold? When looking for a midori what are some other characteristics to look for in one that may have potential?
Rabalock, my understanding is that midori is not a true variety. I find a reference to it a book written in the 1960s, referred to as a "greenish carp." I think safe to say, midori means 'green.' I've had midori from marusaka that are a bluish green. midori from yamanaka ohya are a lime green. kodama describes this as an overlay of yellow over blue. this has been my experience. I have blue shusui with ki = yellow (rather than hi == red) in some fish that have more sumi (black showing as blue) pigmentation toward the dorsal ridge, the color ki looks green on the strong blue coloration, but yellow on the pale blue on the same fish. Sadly, this type -- again, in my experience -- goes muddy. that means that sumi rises through the goldy green skin and makes the fish look splotchy brown. re: your midori, if it appears golden green it's worth keeping. as for bringing the fish indoors, it's a learning experience to be sure. you have another koi to keep it company? I've done it and will never do it again. I had a basement setup, used flow through from the water heater set to 72F and water ran out through a drain. this meant I didn't have to check water quality every day, but I don't have a scientific mind. (!) before I set up the flow through, I would leave hose on or leave drain open. I could never leave house in sane mind. that's me. if you can manage indoor koi, and I have a friend who set up a Rubbermaid tank in her bedroom with five koi about the size of yours, she had good air supply, good filtration, and grow lights. The fish thrived. and she liked the sound of the bubbler at night. you will learn your fish better inside.
now. all of my fish live outdoors in mud. I aerate throughout the winter, keep the aerators pulled off to the sides and a couple feet down. trying not to stir water up too much so the koi will have air but can also find a warm spot in the pond.
whatever you feel most comfortable with, but I would think since you live in NC as long as you have five feet deep of water and keep some air running, your fish should be fine outside. stop feeding at 50F.
Good luck!

Maybe someone in your climate zone can add to this post.
Good luck!

Here’s another update after being moved indoors for 1 month.
Here is another update, sorry for the bad pictures I’ll try to get some better ones in the next day or two. It’s color has really gone down hill since being inside for the past few months, hopefully it will come back out when I move it to the main pond in the next month or two.
Agree with you, Ricshaw.
Rarely does midori change of color go in a desirable direction!!!
Rablalock, be happy. It is still a midorigoi, but instead of becoming muddy, it is getting sunny. I noticed this direction between your first post of this fish and the next ones and almost doubted my eyes.
Keep in mind midori is not a standard variety. It is kawari and there is a wide range to what this type can look like and still be midori. if it becomes doitsu yellow ogon in time, you will still have a pretty fish.
Give your fish a and keep watching him with us.
